Overlaying LaTeX text objects onto PostScript figures works very well, but unfortunately not when the DVI file is viewed with xdvik. This is because xdvik seems to display at first the LaTeX text and afterwards the PostScript figures included on a certain page. This approach works well only when there is no overlap between the individual objects.
LaTeX puts the objects in the same order into the DVI file as they appear in the TEX file. Please confer sample.pdf: LaTeX text is successfully put over a blue box. This works absolutely reliably (the same for the PS file). But looking at the precursor file sample.dvi (please load leer.eps into the same directory) with xdvik is somewhat disappointing: The order of display is interchanged and the text cannot be seen as it is hooded by the "background" picture.

I'm sorry to say that this is one of the limitations of postscript handling that isn't likely to go away, because it's difficult to detect when and where ghostscript will dump its stuff onto the page - closing as 'wontfix'.
