for X11 on newer debian distros one will likely be left with /etc/x11-loc.last and be asked to edit it, after install looks hard and cannot find it (ie, you have no X build dev kits tools to ask xmkmf where it really goes) (debian uses strange install paths to install X, yes, altered from X11's defaults)
Just put the pathname of the real X server in, check others maybe. here's an example for squeeze (the Xorg line below was edited after install asked the question):
