Using OpenGL/SDL, I'd love to see it as an edutainment-geared desktop or desktop-alternative app.
Maybe add a GUI (comm panel?) on one of the sides for a small text editor (to dock and communicate with the planets :), some basic system command buttons, and/or a shell interface?
If it had a tutorial and controls similar to those in common spaceflight simulators/games, it might make for an interesting guide and training tool for new *nix users.

I really hope someone will improve this application, it's one of the coolest things I've ever tried (and I've tried a lot of 3d file system browsers.. most of them sucks.. because it's often impossible to see the smaller files, or the visualization just sucks in some other way)... .
