#433 Field ordering detection very flaky.

Hi :)

I have a PAL TV, and record DVB streams from my digital
TV card, so I have the raw MPEG2 Program Streams as
sent by our national TV broadcasters.

These are 720x576 PAL at 50 fields per second. When I
use XBMP (both 2.4 release and a CVS from December
2003), I find that no amount of changing the Settings
and restarting the test recording will allow me to view
these files with reliable field ordering.

This means that after MPlayer settles down and gets the
sync right (a few seconds) roughly 50% of the time I'll
get a beautifully smooth TV picture at 50 fields per
second, with perfect sync and quality as good as that
from a dedicated set-top box, and the other 50% of the
time I get a juddering mess with huge interlacing
artefacts everywhere there is motion (horizontal
scrolling is the worst offender)

The knee-jerk response to this query seems to be
'enable smoothing' or 'enable deinterlacing' but these
solutions are only kludges meant for poor quality
source files, and VGA display respectively.

A PAL TV expects interlaced output, and the Xbox is
certainly capable of it, so can I suggest some work be
done on this, or even a 'Force Field A/B' option?

Kind regards, and thank you for an otherwise beautiful
product both in graphic and software design :)

Gavin.
