Ok, I'll tell you what you can do to get a replacement (non-microsoft) dashboard that you can further boot linux from as I have. I think all hacked SC/MechAssault saves are compatible with all "Linux" saves (i.e. all dashboards and exploits) so if you want to use the Install/Emergency Linux saves on from xbox-linux.org instead of a new dashboard it cannot harm your xbox. First get your favourite IRC client and /join #xbins which (I think) is on efnet. Follow the ftp instructions there and you'll end up at their xbox software site. Go to /XBOX.exploits/_packages and choose your exploit. I use the UXE exploit as there are a few problems with some of the other exploits. Now for the (not very) difficult part of getting the saves onto the xbox. The "Linux" and Splinter Cell saves will be in two different folders each with an 8 digit hex number as it's name. These should be put in a folder called "UDATA". If you only have Windows on your PC there are some hacks on www.xbox-scene.com in the tutorials section to tell you how to transfer the saves via usb. If you prefer a legal linux only solution you can download the xbox kernel patch from: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=54192&package_id=147485 and enable fatx filesystem support as a module. You can then just copy UDATA to the fatx formatted usb stick. Although fatx support isn't great in linux it should be good enough for a small operation like that. Start your xbox and copy the files over. The hacked Splinter Cell save must apparently be the only Splinter Cell save on the hard drive. Start the game, select the savegame and select "checkpoints".
