#1 Writing file greater than 2GB corrupts UFS vol
It looks like LFS (Large File Support) is not enabled
in this Samba build. I recently installed a Western
Digital 200GB HD into an ADS LL5-DLX-185 dual-link
Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure. I attached it to my iMac
DV running OSX 10.1.5, and formatted the entire drive
as one UFS volume, named Big_Kahuna. I then obtained
Samba 2.2.2 from this site and installed it. I shared
out the new volume as readable/writable by all, and
changed permissions on /Volumes/Big_Kahuna to 777.
Over on the PC, running Windows 98SE and up-to-date
with patches, I mounted the Samba volume, shared as
KAHUNA, as drive D:. I created a subdirectory on the
shared UFS volume named PCBackup, and started the
included Backup utility (I believe originally written
by Seagate). I selected the entire C: drive as part of
the backup set, and selected as a destination
D:\PCBackup\MyBackup.qic (on the Samba share). I
started the backup, and after MyBackup.qic reached 2
GB, access to the Samba share was lost. I wasn't able
to browse the shares on the Mac any longer.
On the Mac, I wasn't able to kill smbd or nmbd as root.
I tried to restart the Mac and it hung, so I had to
hit reset. After it restarted, it refused to mount the
Firewire drive, saying that the volume had defects. I
started Disk Utility and ran verify on the disk, and
verify and repair on the volume, and it looked like it
was fine. I selected Options->Mount with the volume
selected, and it silently refused to mount the drive.
I restarted the Mac (normally this time), and again
could not mount the volume. I finally had to
initialize the volume again, erasing all contents.
I tried everything again, the exact same way, and got
the same results, being required to erase the disk
again. It failed at the identical place in the backup,
so I believe it is a large file support problem in
Samba. I was able to create a 4 GB file manually
within the Macintosh on this volume, so the problem
isn't UFS.

It looks like 2.2.7 has some bug fixes for large file
support. Maybe it's time to update Samba X with this latest
stable version. --Jonathan
