Hello, <OPTIONAL BACKGROUND>Yesterday I was reading about wxperl and it sounded interesting. That's where my journey led here. I found something to download, but I'm still not sure whether I got the right thing (Maybe a new version of Perl? I'm running 5.6, but this page talked about 6xx and 8xx.. but maybe it meant the version of wxPerl? Or is there a version 6 of Perl that I need? But no, the thing I downloaded said 0.17.) So anyway, disregarding this confusion I pressed forward.</OPTIONAL BACKGROUND> <OPTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM> I downloaded Wx-0.17-wxmsw2.4.2-win32-5.8.0.zip and used winzip to extract the three files (one is a .tar.gz; it made me wonder whether this file is for Windows or whether it's intended for a Linux box.). Then I read the README.TXT, which said (among other things): # for Perl 5.6.x ppm install --location=. Wx[-dev]-0.17 Oh, okay, my 5.6 Perl is all right after all. But when I typed that last line, I got: Error installing package 'Wx[-dev]-0.17': Could not locate a PPD file for package Wx[-dev]-0.17 Any ideas what the trouble is? Am I supposed to get something out of the .tar.gz file? Was I supposed to substitute something for [-dev] that I was too dumb to know (it's okay, I know that I'm ignorant)? Any help at all would be much appreciated. </OPTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM> Never mind. I figured out the problem. Apparently my version of ppm is 2.1.2, too old to do any of the above. And the only way to get a more recent version is to get a new ActivePerl. Heck with it, I'll just go on using it in text-only mode. It's not worth replacing the house's foundation just to change a window. But I must say that the # for Perl 5.6.x still puzzles me. Sincerely, Melora Adams |
