Hi, I'm trying to run JBoss as a service using the wrapper and it doesn't work with the latest releases of the Java SDK (I've tried 1.6.0_10 and 1.6.0_11). I get the following error message in the wrapper log file: STATUS | wrapper | 2009/01/12 16:28:30 | Launching a JVM... INFO | jvm 4 | 2009/01/12 16:28:30 | Error occurred during initialization of VM INFO | jvm 4 | 2009/01/12 16:28:30 | Could not reserve enough space for code cache ERROR | wrapper | 2009/01/12 16:28:30 | JVM exited while loading the application. However, if I use an older version of Java (1.6.0_03) then everything works fine. Any ideas? Cheers, /Eddie |

Hi Leif,
Thanks for your inputs. Actually my understanding about the wrapper was: wrapper will create a thread in which my main class will keep running.
But this is not the case (as u explained). So some how I tried to keep my main class running (by adding while (true) {}) and it worked.
Thanks and regards,
Riyaz..

Subject: Re: [Wrapper-user] Wrapper Stopped with JVM exited normally
Riyaz,
What happens if you run your GatewayWrapper class without the Wrapper
present? Java decides that it is time to shutdown when there are no
more non-daemon threads running in the application.
It works the same way when running within the Wrapper. When all
non-daemon threads have completed, the JVM will exit and the shutdown
hooks will be fired. Once of those shutdown hooks controls the
shutdown process of the Wrapper.
My guess is that each of your beans either do not launch threads or
they launch daemon threads.
Just to make sure, could you set the wrapper.debug=true property then
reply with the resulting log?
The solution to this is to have the main method never return by going
into a loop containing a wait, Another non-daemon thread will work as
well.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi, I'm trying to start my java class as service. In that class, i'm loading spring beans and starting a jms listener (around 8-10 listener). Here all the beans are loaded and all the listeners are started. But soon after that, main method completes execution and service wrapper stops with code 0. Nathanael, The cause of this problem will be obvious if you set the following property: wrapper.java.command.loglevel=INFO This error is stating that the Java executable could not be found. It is most likely a problem with your environment. What is the value of wrapper.java.command? If this: wrapper.java.command=java then: Your PATH environment variable does not include the location of java. If this: wrapper.java.command=%JAVA_HOME%/bin/java then: Your JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined. This happens because when you register any script to run on startup, it uses the default root environment to run the service. That environment usually has a very simple base environment defined. You need to make sure that any of your environment variables are defined correctly for that environment. Hi, I have a java project using System Tray (The same app in thread "Unable to locate the class"). I set up the Wrapper on system startup (i'm using debian), but, when the system initialize, the wrapper doesn't start my service. Wrapper.log has: Launching a JVM... Unable to start JVM: No such file or directory (2) JVM process is gone. ^[]0;Testing^G <-- Wrapper Stopped Maybe the reason could be the same that Leif wrote on the other thread: X's libraries not available on startup. Thanks Leif, I understood the problem, but I realized that it is only happening on ubuntu. I'm testing on ubuntu and debian, but my focus should be on debian. So, this error doesn't happen on debian... but Wrapper is acusing another error and I'll open a new thread for this one. -- Nathanael de Castro Costa Programador NATI - Núcleo de Aplicação em Tecnologia da Informação UNIFOR - Universidade de Fortaleza Campus da Unifor - bloco M - sala M01 Fone: (85) 3477-3360 |

Nathanael,
An ExceptionInInitializerError does not mean that the class could not be
found. This means that an exception of some sort was thrown from within
the TestClass init method. You should have method like this in your class:
public class TestClass {
}

Nathanael,
An ExceptionInInitializerError does not mean that the class could not be
found. This means that an exception of some sort was thrown from within
the TestClass init method. You should have method like this in your class:
public class TestClass {
static {
// An exception is being thrown here.
}
}
The original exception thrown will be wrapped within the
ExceptionInInitializerError and can be accessed using the e.getException()
method.
My guess is that you have some code that is trying to access Swing or
something that requires some libraries within X. Those are only available
if the WindowManager has been initialized and the current environment has
access to it.
You may need to have a second Java process that is started when a user logs
in that will have a presence in the tray. That process would then
communicate with the actual daemon process behind the scenes.
Cheers,
Leif

Hi everyone, I have a java project using System Tray. I set up the Wrapper on system startup (i'm using linux), but, when the system initialize, the wrapper doesn't start my service. Wrapper.log has: WrapperSimpleApp: Unable to locate the class mypackage.TestClass: java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError But if I start the service myself, no errors appears on wrapper.log and the tray works fine. And If I run my app (using java -jar), no errors appears on console and the tray works fine too. Hi Leif, I want to be able to pipe data into the service that JSW starts. For example, if a user needs to enter a password before starting the service, how would this be done? Kevin, What are you wanting to do. The System.in functionality is currently only useful when running in console mode. It is posible to display a console when running as an interactive service however. In regards to the thread entitled, "java.io.IOException: The handle is invalid", it appears that JSW now supports reading from System.in, or at least it doesn't close the file handle. If I'm starting my application as a service, how can I pipe data over System.in? Thanks |

Hello all, We are getting ready to release version 3.3.2 of the Java Service Wrapper. In the past, we have build our PARISC HP-UX versions on the HP Test Drive servers. That service has been replaced by their DSPP service which does not support PARISC any longer. My question is, how critical is PARISC support to the user base? If so, would anyone be willing to spend a little time walking us through the process of finding an appropriate used system and helping with getting it up and running as a build machine? Thanks in advance, Leif |

Larry,
The problem is that even though you have overridden your start method,
the main method is still the same. This means that when you execute
Test.main(), it is really executing the WrapperSimpleApp.main()
method. That method in turn instantiates an instance of
WrapperSimpleApp directly so your Test class instance is never
created.
To fix this, create the following method and place it into your Test class:
public static void main( String args[] )
{
new Test( args );
}
I added a note about this to the javadocs for the next release.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Leif

I am trying to subclass WrapperSimpleApp and running into problems. I
have read the javadoc where it says it is possible and to make sure
any overridden method calls the super method. I have done that, and it
still is not working the way I want it.
Here is a stripped down example:
package test;
import org.tanukisoftware.wrapper.WrapperSimpleApp;
public class Test extends WrapperSimpleApp {
protected Test(String[] args) {
super(args);
}
public Integer start(String[] args) {
System.out.println("I should see this in the output!");
return super.start(args);
}
}
In my wrapper.conf file:
wrapper.java.mainclass=test.Test
And I include the jar in the wrapper.java.classpath array.
The wrapper starts up, and runs fine as a service and from the
console, but I never see the System.out.println statement in the log
(or on the console). I tried DEBUG log level as well.
If I copy ALL of the source code of WrapperSimpleApp and modify where
necessary (class names, and copy over the WrapperPrintStream), and
enter my System.out.println's where I need them, it works then.
It seems that the WrapperManager (or whatever calls the start (or any
of the other methods subclassed from WrapperSimpleApp) never get
called on my subclass.
Is the javadoc just wrong on the code, and the class cannot be
subclassed, or are there some hoops you have to jump through?

I am using 3.3.1 . I ended up finding out that the issue was I had a handle config file pointing to my public IP and needed it to be pointing to the private IP behind the firewall to get the JVM to run the test on some ports. I also got rid of having an encrypted passphrase and went with an unencrypted one. I found this solution was recommended for my dspace setup. Jewel, What version of the Wrapper are you using? Reading console input was not supported until 3.2.0. Please let me know the JVM versions as well. Sai, This is done in the same way as it is done with Java standalone. Do you want to reference them on the generated Java command line? Normally the log4j.properties file is found by searching the path. You simply need to add the location of that directory to your classpath as follows: wrapper.java.classpath.1=../lib/wrapper.jar wrapper.java.classpath.2=../lib/myapp.jar wrapper.java.classpath.3=../lib/ <- this is where your log4j.properties file is located. This page walks you through debugging log4j configuration. http://jaitechwriteups.blogspot.com/2006/07/know-how-log4j-tries-to-configure.html Cheers, Leif On Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 3:05 AM, Sunkavelli, Sai M (Sai)** CTR ** <sai...@al...> wrote: > > Hi > > In wrapper.conf is there any place to mention log4j.properties and > MyOwnApplication.properties files or how do we do in general with > wrapper.conf > > Thanks > -Sai |

First time posting: I am trying to setup a handle service on a Windows 2003 box for a Dspace setup and am having problems with a simple wrapper setup. I am needing to setup a wrapper as a service in Windows but when I follow the instructions on the following wiki it doesn't work. http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Handle_Server_Setup_as_Windows_Service_(using_Tanuki)#Installing_the_Handle_Server_as_a_Windows_Service When it comes to running my bat file I get the following output on the console: wrapper | Launching a JVM... jvm 1 | WrapperManager: Initializing... jvm 1 | Enter the passphrase for this server's authentication private key: jvm 1 | Note: Your passphrase will be displayed as it is entered Here is where the cursor is for me to enter my passphrase Once I enter my passphrase the cursor just sits there and nothing happens. I have to CRTL^C to get out. I am a novice to all of this and hope I am even making sense. -- Jewel -- Jewel Makda Student Computer Services Coordinator http://blogs.washburnlaw.edu/jewel/ |
