Markus,
Thanks for the well described bug report. But
unfortunately, I have still not been able to reproduce this.
I retested this today with Sun 1.4.0_03 and 1.4.2_01_b06,
but both appear to be working as expected. I tested on an
XP machine, I'll try it out tonight on a 2000 machine.
I have a few questions for you.
1) Are both the TestWrapper and your application running
using the exact same installed version of Java? If so, as
a test, what happens if you simply copy the JRE directory to
a new location. Then run the TestWrapper against the new
copy and your application against the existing copy. I am
wondering if it is some problem with the way Java's DLLs are
being loaded.
2) All of your test cases have the TestWrapper's interactive
flag set. Does your application work correctly if the
TestWrapper's interactive flag is false when running as a
service?
3) I was not really clear. Is your application running
under the Wrapper or as a stand alone application? I got
the impression that it is not, but want to confirm.
4) What happens if you run one copy of the TestWrapper as an
NT service. And then rerun it from the console. You will
get an error that the action socket server can not be
started due to a bind error for the second copy, but it
should start and you should be able to see both GUIs. If
this works, and your application does not, then we get to
try and figure out what is different.
Cheers,
Leif

1) The problem remains the same when using the exact same
jre or when using different copies of the jre (located in
different directories).
2) The problem occurs even if the interactive flag is set to
false.
3) My application is not run under the wrapper. It is
started by a simple batch file that invokes the necessary
java command.
(Just something like ".../jre/bin/java -classpath ...
MainClass")
4) I'm able to start the TestWrapper as an NT service and
after that I can launch the TestWrapper using the
TestWrapper.bat
This combination works well and I can seen both GUIs.
5) Very strange to me is testcase 4. When I launch a java
application "A" first and then start the NT service
manually, I am able to end and restart the application "A"
(or any other application "B") as often as I like. It works
fine as long as there is one java swing application that is
started before the TestWrapper NT service.
The obvious difference between our applications is: Your
TestWrapper application is a java awt one, mine is a swing
one. So I tried my own awt application and it worked. The
moment I try to start a swing application after the
TestWrapper service it fails.
Any ideas what the problem may be?
Please let me know if I can help with any testing.

Markus,
Another user, Sona, on the users mailing list has also
reported running into this same problem. He says that by
setting the wrapper.ntservice.account when installing the
service to the "Administrator" user the problem goes away.
Could you test this out as well? I am wondering if it
works with any non-system user or if the service must be
running in the same user as the one currently logged in.
By the way, I have also tried running full Swing
applications rather than just AWT ones and have still been
unable to reproduce this. The user may be a good hint
though. I'll look into that some more.
Cheers,
Leif

I think I have narrowed down the source of the problem as I
could replicate it on a different machine. Probable causes
1) Windows Update (changed the privilege of Local System
account)
2) Install of FTP server component in IIS
These were the only two changes I had done, after which
this problem showed.
To replicate I did the following
1) Do windows update
2) Install FTP server
3) Reinstall/install new JRE (any version, preferably the latest
beta)
4) Install the testwrapper service
5) reboot
6) Check if service started, then run a swing program.
Markus can you confirm if you have FTP server installed and /
or the Security Patches? It will be helpful in narrowing down
the problem.

I'm not running the FTP server component of IIS. So I think
your idea is correct. It seems to be one of the security
updates.
To Leif:
The problem doesn't occur when I run the service under the
"Administrator" account. But under these circumstances I'm
not able to 'interact' with the desktop.
Is there any security change I can make to the System
account or any Windows component, so that the service runs
under the 'Local System' account with desktop interaction?
Thanks

I tried different permissions on the jre directory. I even
added the SYSTEM (User) to the group of Administrators,
nothing worked.
Right now I have got no idea where to start to solve the
problem.
To be honest, I'm not very familiar with all that permission
stuff in windows.

After examining what modules were loaded by the application
with and without the running service, I found out that three

All the DLL's have something to do with the OpenGL or
DirectDraw interfaces of Windows.
After that I installed the Microsoft DirectX 9.0b Update

Thank you all for the help.

Any progress narrowing this down? I have not been able to
reproduce it anywhere. I have not forgotten about it. Just
not sure what to try next.
