Sure, I was just establishing that it probably has nothing to do with
hardware defects.

Why, to catch bugs, of course. :) The box would probably have crashed
without this debug option, wouldn't it? (But with no meaningful message.)
Doesn't the BUG I hit mean that the kernel was referencing freed memory?
