Drag Select Mod

Is there any way to still have a visible selection
marquee when there is no background to click on to
start the procedure.

When working deep (as rt nicely puts it!) with no
background in sight, area selection is no longer
available as a sensible option.

If only 1 mode could be modified to maintain the
marquee, my personal preference would be vertex?

Would use of a keyboard modifier here help?

Yes, I second this one too. Maybe the d key to force a drag
select? Right now d is for (Can't Select) whatever the heck
that is. d for drag would be a better use of it I bet. And
perhaps while you are at it another modifier might be handy,
One to only drag select the facing set so that you could nab
a bunch of items on the side of the model facing you while
the ones on the back faces would remain unselected. Perhaps
    ALT-d for that?

    From my checkin comment:

    Selection improvements.
    Ctrl+LMB: Marque deselect.
Shift+LMB: Marque select. Only vertices/edges/faces fully
    inside the
Maque will be selected, and only front-facing faces or
    vertices/edges
belonging to front-facing faces. (Note that hidden
    geometry can still
be selected, e.g. on a torus.)
Ctrl+Shift+LMB: Like Shift+LMB, but deselect instead of
    selects.
(Based by suggestions by PuzzledPaul, Jstro, gerffeiner and
    possibly
    others.)
