If wings is running with an unsaved model or data, and restart or shutdown is selected there doesn't appear to be a 'save prompt' prior to actual shutdown taking place.

It is not intended. I will look into how it can be fixed. It might require changes to the Erlang runtime and/or SDL, so don't expect a fix very soon.
