I'm not 10% positive this is the case, but here's my guess. On many keyboard layouts, the @ symbol is accessible through the Option modifier (i.e. in the italian layout it's on opt-ò if I remember correctly). When the setting "Option key works as Alt" is enabled, those symbols aren't accessible (I'm sure about this, as I have two Macs with italian keyboards at home). Just uncheck that box and you'll be able to type them. (and the Cmd key will work as Alt).
Follow-up brainstorm/feature request: maybe "Option key works as Alt" should be disabled by default? I'm not sure, but I personally disable it all the time to avoid annoyances with the Option modifier.

Yeah i noticed that already, for someone that was the solution. Can you deselect that as default? This will help a lot of people.

On pure english systems with english keyboards, its much more useful to have it enabled, since you never really need it for anything but a Alt button in a game.

Maybe I can try to put up some type of poll on situations like this and see what most people think the default settings should be at?

This setting is saved in engines, meaning it would be tough to go back and change them all.

Default setting in my preliminary WS8 builds has Option Sends Alt disabled by default... closing this.
