Hi Fuchaka, I'd suggest you install a more recent version of Linux such as Fedora 5 or Debian 3.2, that way you'll have less library and package dependency problems. In addition, sqlite comes by default on the new Linux distros. Take a pick of the distro you want to go with and lets see which on we can source for you. I'd really recommend you upgrade now before you get in too deep in development. thanks a lot for an insight into wikiyetu on saturday, the project is viable and practical, i wish it succeeds so as to be a stepping stone for other open source projects people have in mind. now i have issues with linux. am a new convert, around 3 months in linux, am learning this XUL thing fast, but sqlite i have no idea, basically i have vast experiance on win32. applications (delphi, c++, pascal, mysql, mssql, sybase, oracle). so sql is no problem, but i need somebody to push me into sqlite, my laptop has redhat 8, i do not wish to be a spectator . --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. |

Hi,
World Software Freedom is a day when we celebrate all the liberties of
"Free Speech" availed to us through Open Source software. It is on this
day that we have chosen to launch a project that will contribute to a
community that has greatly influenced both our formation as developers
and our experiences as end users.
Wikiyetu is an opensource project which aims to develop an offline
encyclopedia for use by people who do not have internet access. The
resulting encyclopedia would then be distributed as a DVD / CD hence
enabling access by individuals / institutions to a wealth of knowledge.
The aim of DevCon1 will be to jumpstart the Wikipedia project and will
therefore be a development conference and not just a discussion forum.
The following are the areas we look to address on Saturday:
1. Database design
2. User Interface Design
a. Design of look and feel
b. Navigation Design
3. Design of update mechanisms
4. Licensing
Plus a look at the following topics would bring you up to speed o some
of the tools that we would use:
1. XUL
2. sql Lite
3. Wikipedia
4. javascript
Please carry a laptop as this will be a developer conference.
Wikiyetu DevCon one will be held at the International House Business
Center Conference room on Saturday 16th September all day.
To get some more information about the Wikiyetu initiative visit:
http://wikiyetu.sourceforge.net/
Sorry i almost forgot......you are cordially invited to participate in
this event.

Microsoft; On the day *I* go to work for Microsoft, faint oinking sounds
will be
heard from far overhead, the moon will not merely turn blue but
develop polkadots, and hell will freeze over so solid the brimstone
will go superconductive.

Hi all, Here is a rough sketch of a schedule for the devcon (16th sept). Please note that we have to compress all this into a single 8-12hr day. If we are fewer than 15, we may be able to secure some meeting space (Penguinlabs) Otherwise we'll have to use the IFC venue. Starts at ~8AM Introductions Project Introduction ::Joseph? Rough sketch of goals and ways to get there Goals Priorisation Hacking Summary and Overview of achievements Other Items.... (Key signing, chatting etc) Ends at ~6-7PM @DavidKago >This is OK but it seems you have limited the development to a particular technology/platform. I dont see anything on Java, XML, AJAX, SOAP etc. Where's our place!! Is this also limited to Unix only, where are win32 pple? Nope: we are not limiting ourselves to a single technology. We are actually using XUL (User interface design done in XML), Javascript (AJAX uses it), Maybe SOAP for updates... So we do need a large skillset. Please note that the project aims to be crossplatform. It should run across windows, *nix and the MacOS platform out of the box (XUL does this for us). Thus, we can't say that we are limiting ourselves to a single technology. We are using technology that rises abstracts the platform. @Job Ballard Some design work may come your way. Can we all move the discussion to the mailing lists... On 9/7/06, morris muchemi <mmu...@gm...> wrote: > Sorry, forgot this. Hi All, It's time to break out those rusty coding skills and start off Wikiyetu with a (fl)hash bang!!. Hence I propose that we hold DEVCON1 on the 16th of sept. 2006 which also happens to the software freedom day (http://softwarefreedomday.org/). We don't have a venue yet (Muchemi?) and a plan (Please float your DevCON ideas and schedule proposals). If you a new to this, have a look at #Mozilla XUL #SQLite #Javascript We also need designers for the GUI, skin themes etc. In the meantime, *Please ask friends and other coders to join the devel or users mailing lists. We will need bugs to be discovered and fixed, extensive testing, feedback, feature requests.... * Generate your own gpg keys for the key signing party. * Get a basic feel of svn and or CVS * Shoot your ideas and questions to the mailing lists Thanks and hope to see you all at the conference LMwangi -- Microsoft; On the day *I* go to work for Microsoft, faint oinking sounds will be heard from far overhead, the moon will not merely turn blue but develop polkadots, and hell will freeze over so solid the brimstone will go superconductive.
