It would be nice if a leaf in the canopy could have more than 6 offshoots or 'child' leaves. I'm not sure what the easiest way of accomplishing this would be. Perhaps if a parent leaf fills up, it creates another, smaller scale, set of leaves off one of the main branches. Please see the following image for an illustration of this concept.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/theoryshaw/sets/72157605829735323/show/
Perhaps it's the newest and highest rank design in the 6 offshoots that turns into the smaller branch with new offshoots. Perhaps over time, as this new set continues to 'bud' with new offshoots and grows in popularity, the set becomes larger. The larger this new set becomes, the smaller the 'old' set becomes... shinking down to the size the new set started out as.
If it's too complicated/expensive to build, I think 6 off-shoots is enough - whereby the least favorite is automatically the one replaced. 6 iterations of a single design, where not a single one of the existing 6 off-shoots are good enough to carry on and improve upon might be a rare event. If it does get to that point, I'm sure at least one of the 6 is clearly the worst.
