NEWS 2015/03/24:
Will be updated soon for usage with the original MediaWiki. Works good so far.

The motivation:

Wikis are a great way for students to learn (constructivism). There are a lot wikifarms on the web, where you can create your own wikis. Some of them are free, some are freemium, some are commercial and some are full of advertising.
The data of your students is stored on foreign servers. And if you want special features or just a puristic design, you have to be lucky to find a wiki that fits your needs.

Almost every school has its own webspace with PHP support. So, why not use it for a wikifarm, that is really under your control?

The goals are:

  • Easy installation of the wikifarm by the school admin.
  • Easy set up of new wikis by the teachers.
  • Easy and intuitive interface for the students.

The idea:

The basic idea is to create a copy of the whole folder of the "_animal" wiki. The wikis will be instances of the PmWiki by Patrick R. Michaud (http://pmwiki.org, registered trademark). This wikisoftware is written in PHP, totally file-based and easy to handle. Further it is very small, so it doesn't matter, that you have a high code redundancy. Each Wiki requires under 1 megabyte on your server. It will grow quickly because your users will fill it with content, so the installation size will soon be irrelevant.

The first version is too dangerous to be open in the web. Be sure to protect it via htaccess.

If you have any questions or ideas for the project, feel free to contribute.

Todo:

  • Successpage, if new Wiki was created.
  • Error-Page (if name is already taken etc.)
  • Make changes to the wiki-config (title, passwords, etc.). Would be specifically for the PmWiki.
  • Administration Page to change config
  • Security...
  • Translation...
  • Front-end
  • Licensing (GPL?)
