We are using WM as a Java preprocessor of sorts to do conditional compilation on our MIDP source so that debug code is always removed from final builds etc. 2. We are using WM + our XMLHelper to process XML files containing game engine data, to produce a Java source file containing constants and also a binary file (using a custom binary output helper) that is loaded by the game engine. 3. We are using WM + another custom helper to combine many binary files into one, generating XML that contains data relating to these binary files. 4. The other night I wrote what must be the most trivial "blog" style content management system in under an hour, producing both WAP content from it and also using JavaScript in a nice way to allow embedding of news feeds in any HTML page without any server side scripting - the feeds are hosted by my Ignition webapp and any site can embed them in their HTML with custom styling, with just 2 lines of code. It's all just a quick and dirty hack but works very, very well. Just a success story or two to pass on.... Yes, Ignition WILL be released at some point, hopefully soon. Greetings, WebMacro can regain some of its luster, imho, by being the first alternative to JSP to support Java Server Faces. JSF is a complete rewrite of Struts (Craig McClanahan) and provides an end-to-end bridge of the stateless http model to the stateful application model using a combination of xml declarations and supporting classes. Most imporantly, it is renderer independent. That said a rendering engine requires a set of binding classes so that messages for the rendering engine are caught and translated for the specific rendering engine. I attended my second presentation on JSF last night. The speaker developed the app in real time. Completely sharp about the whole MVC/validation/update/event support in JSF. He convinced me that JSF is absolutely essential for WebMacro's future. Marc has worked valiantly to bring a Ignition as a Web app framework to WebMacro. Many of his ideas are incorporated in JSF. Some parts of his framework can augment as helpers in JSF. If he chooses to continue on with Ignition, I will of course support him in that endeavor. I have used ignition to build a complete site and it has a lot of great ideas. In short, I would like to make this the JSF compatibility the last big project before Release 2.0. The advent of JSF as a standard action processing, event model for web apps makes for the perfect, standards-based approach we all have been looking for to validate WM in a Web app setting. Lastly, I implore you to keep this development secret. I know that Apache will do something but I am not sure that Velocity with its ties to Turbine is about to tackle another project. But with all their free time over in Apache land, one never knows. I did a net scan and see no initiative for creating a JSF binding to Velo. And, yes, I hear the chorus already. Go for it, Lane :). C'mon guys. WM is our adopted baby. Let's bring her to another major birthday party. WM rocks. And, it will really rock with a JSF binding. Kindest regards, -- Lane Sharman Just Do IT, Better. 858-755-2868 ps: marc, let's talk offline about Ignition versus JSF |

Mostly out of curiosity, I implemented a TagLib for WM Script. It turned out to be quite simple. It's just a proof-of-concept at this point but I'll polish it up a bit. You just put the WM Script inside a wm:template tag. I expose the JSP PageContext as $Jsp. This is probably dangerous but it was a easy way to get access to all the JSP stuff. Ultimately I'd like to try and use other taglibs from within the WM Script. Did it. http://www.webmacro.org/UsingWebMacroWithJsp On first save attempt I got a number format exception. But the second try went through ok. Did not save the error message unfortunately. Also this page seems to have a deficiency. http://www.webmacro.org/AddNewContent It talks about edit, not adding new pages. Found that by guess work. If someone could write up and post a simple JSP page at http://www.webmacro.org/UsingWebMacroWithJsp that would be fantastic and I second the motion. Thankfully, I am completely ignorant of how to do this so I leave it to one of you JSP experts out there. I am pretty sure one could do this with jsp:include facility - Outer template asks servlet engine to process another template or servlet and include the result in calling template. One JSP file could include URL to a webmacro template. Would that not work ? It seems like an elegant way to integrate. Harmeet |

OK that's your take on it :-) Personally, cost/benefit analysis or not, I am not happy shipping software with known bugs that require workarounds - it's how code becomes mangled and twisted and you end up with a right old mess. If we're not going to get anybody who can fix this working on it though, a kludge it will have to be :( Marc -- Marc Palmer Contract Java Consultant/Developer w a n g j a m m e r s java and web software design experts with an ethical outlook http://www.wangjammers.org |
