If you have DBA's around, I'd recommend finding a way to snag some their time-at least for the big, ugly things like initial installs and upgrades. You might get by without them working on the system day-to-day, but they'll be worth every dime when you're doing the install. Subject: Re: [Webct-admin] Question on DBA for Vista I'm curious about this as well. Here at UNT, we are basically still deciding how to handle this. So far, I have been learning the Oracle DBA ropes along with my normal duties. We have a couple of DBAs on site that are devoted to Peoplesoft work. In theory, we could pull them in, but they are pretty busy as it is. For now, we don't have a DBA devoted to the project. I'd also be interested in the total number of Sys-Admin/WebCT Admin staff you all have devoted to Vista and/or CE. Especially at the larger installations, but all around. I'll start... we have 2 admins. We're responsible for all aspects of Vista and CE along with Streaming Media and a few other odds and ends. We're lucky enough to have another group that administers our backups and OS installations, they also are there in a pinch to help with SysAdmin problems... but it's generally the two of us. Our WebCT Training and helpdesk are in another area too.... Our Center for Distributed Learning has a fairly large staff. -austin Michko, Georgette M wrote: How are you approaching the recommendation of WebCT that we need to have a dba for the Vista database? I spoke to some of you about this issue at the user conference, and I would like to hear from others. We have just got our hardware and are beginning to install the hardware and operating system for Vista. We plan to begin Vista training this fall. We will pilot about 17 courses in Spring 2004 and hope to go live with Vista in Fall 2004. We do not currently have a dba and have relied on WebCT for database advice. We are advertising for a dba and hope to hire someone in the next few weeks. I would like to give candidates an idea of what to expect. What is your experience in regards to a dba for the Vista administration? Do you currently have a dba on staff for Vista? How critical is a dba for the day-to-day operation? How much time does the dba spend on Vista administration each day/week/month? I would appreciate any information you can provide about the role of the dba in your Vista operation.
