At Purdue, we have two DBA=92s assigned to the Vista project=97a = primary and a backup. We don=92t use them 100% of their time except during install = or upgrade periods; they actually belong to a pool of DBA=92s who take = care of big systems (SIS, HR, financials, etc). =20 It has been hugely valuable to have dedicated DBA=92s on this project, = getting Vista up and running has required a lot of DBA-type work (installing = and configuring an Oracle DB as well as 9iAS, and IFS=97plus all the = tuning, monitoring, backups, etc required for normal use), and having the = resources explicitly allocated has taken a significant load off the rest of the technical staff on the project team. =20 When we have been doing installs, we used every bit at least one of the DBA=92s time allotment and sometimes cut into the other (at the same = time). However, once up with 1.2, their daily time spent on Vista was on the = order of minutes to an hour (standard monitoring, care-and-feeding, etc). = Our experience with 2.0 is still young to estimate time spent for it. So I guess the answer is: we work them pretty hard during an install or when = then there is a problem, but during regular (stable) uptimes their time on product is in the =93few=94 hours per week range. =20 I used to be a DBA before moving to project management, and no way = would I take on a Vista deployment without a DBA on the project--maybe not = full-time (necessarily), but within easy reach, and whose time I could monopolize = for days at a stretch without worry. But then, I tend toward the = paranoid=85. ;-) =20 Hope that helps. =20 Luke =20 -----Original Message----- From: Michko, Georgette M [mailto:GM...@Ce...]=20 Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2003 11:25 AM To: Webct-Admin (web...@li...) Subject: [Webct-admin] Question on DBA for Vista =20 How are you approaching the recommendation of WebCT that we need to = have a dba for the Vista database? I spoke to some of you about this issue at = the user conference, and I would like to hear from others. We have just got our hardware and are beginning to install the hardware = and operating system for Vista. We plan to begin Vista training this fall. = We will pilot about 17 courses in Spring 2004 and hope to go live with = Vista in Fall 2004. We do not currently have a dba and have relied on WebCT for database advice. We are advertising for a dba and hope to hire someone = in the next few weeks. I would like to give candidates an idea of what to expect.=20 What is your experience in regards to a dba for the Vista = administration? Do you currently have a dba on staff for Vista? How critical is a dba for = the day-to-day operation? How much time does the dba spend on Vista administration each day/week/month? I would appreciate any information you can provide about the role of = the dba in your Vista operation.=20 Georgette Michko=20 Academic Technology Support Center=20 318 Farish Hall=20 University of Houston=20 713-743-1757=20 gm...@uh...=20 =20 --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
