The ports were picked because they weren't used by any common service at the time and could be started by a non-root user on a UNIX system. I've never heard of a system that we had a port conflict and even if we did, you could change our ports without dinking with the clients. Remember the current line of WebCT is still just an extension of software that was originally developed to put one class on the 'net. That's a big reason why we're rewriting for Cobalt. As for standards in chat/whiteboard, I don't know of any particular ones we're implmenting. I think most people would prefer us to be able to interact with one of the existing IM systems before H.323, but that's a personal opinion. That's why I pushed for Jabber, but we want to keep the default system simple & let the complicated stuff come later or from a 3rd party.
