We use the Sungard Luminis portal with a 60 minute timeout, and we have a 90 minute timeout set in Blackboard. We were running into this issue where the portal timeout would end Blackboard sessions, but our portal administrator commented out a couple of lines of code somewhere to decouple the portal timeout from Blackboard. Now the portal can timeout, and the Blackboard session stays active. You can also close the portal browser window without affecting Blackboard. While I'm on the subject of timeouts, we recently had a professor who was entering comments regarding student papers in Blackboard for a long time without saving who lost a lot of work when their Blackboard session timed out at 90 minutes. As I understand it, the professor was actively working (typing) in Blackboard but Blackboard saw them as idle because they did not click on anything that would send data to the server. Apparently, we need to make more of an effort to teach users how the timeout works. It would help in some cases if Blackboard were to display a popup window announcing that it was about to timeout and telling users to save their work. --Kevin --------------------- Kevin Schoonmaker Computing Services Wheaton College Wheaton, IL 60187 Phone: 630-752-5264 -----Original Message----- From: Burkes, Kate M. Very handy to have the direct login option when there is issues with the portal, plus our portal has a 1 hour timeout that causes problems for students who access Bb from there and then forget to click back into the portal to keep the session alive. Subject: [Webct-admins] Blackboard via portal v. direct access? Hi all, A quick informal survey: If you use a portal with single sign-on to Blackboard, do students/faculty also hvae the option to log in to Blackboard directly (using a Bb login page), thus bypassing the portal? Thanks for any responses. /Chris Chris Palmarini Instructional Technology Specialist Blackboard Administrator | Certified Trainer 530-895-2988 pal...@bu...
