I tested macam with an intel Play mcroscope (CPiA camera).

On a Macbook (Intel) the image with QCIF format only is broken in the
latest version, and previous versions since 0.8.3, but works in v0.8.2.
and 0.8.1b (maybe uses rosetta as these old binaries may not be
universal(?)).

Just zig-zag lines appear starting with 0.8.3. The other formats are OK.

On PPC (Ti powerbook) it works.
I recompiled on Intel. Then 0.8.2 and 0.8.1b were also broken.

non QCIF formats work ,

I retried your macam-0.8.8 binary in rosetta mode on the MacBook
It works with CPiA in QCIF format, but not without rosetta.

All the other formats (CIF etc) work both in rosetta and intel native.

I had a similar problem. To me, the flaw appears as though the "horizontal hold" on my "television set" is mis-adjusted. Of course, modern TV's no longer have adjustments for horizontal hold and vertical hold available to the consumer. But in my experience, it looks like a "horizontal hold" problem.

    System: PowerBook G4, 1.25 GHz, Mac OS X 10.4.8, QuickTime 7.1.3
Camera: ZoomCam USB for Mac (Zoom Telephonics Model 1596) (USB 1.1)

macam app 0.9.0: delivered same QCIF flaw
macam app 0.8.9: delivered same QCIF flaw
macam app 0.8.8: does NOT show this flaw
macam.component 0.8.8: does NOT show this flaw
macam app 0.8.2: does NOT show this flaw

I have currently installed macam.component 0.8.8. Thank you.

I ran macam 0.9.1 again on macbook core duo

The QCIF problem is still there in the cvs release.

I tested with both the QX3 and a standard CPiA webcam
    (Ezonics EZ CAM)

same problem, so its not QX3 specific.

some timing parameter is screwed up in QCIF
I built the source and the problem is there, so if there is any clue where to find
a QCIF-specific issue with CPiA. I could try to find it!

Updating my earlier comment (from 2006), for new platform.

    MacBook Pro 5,3 2.8GHz Intel Core2 Duo
    Mac OS X 10.6.6, QuickTime 10.0
ZoomCam USB for Mac (Zoom Telephonics Model 1596) (USB 1.1)

    macam 0.9.2

QSIF and SIF work just fine at 15 and 30 fps.
Other resolutions have frequency (horizontal hold) problems at 15 and 30 fps.
(Other speeds not tested; other macam versions not tested)

    macam component 0.9.2

Skype 2.8.0.866 displays image in Video Preferences pane. (Still unsure how it looks to another user during videoconference.)

Thank you for allowing me to use Skype with my MacBook Pro!
