Hi, I just dpkg -i webmin_1.310_all.deb in my ubuntu edgy system and tried to install virtual-server-3.30.gpl.wbm.gz from the "Webmin Modules" page but after visiting https://localhost:10000/virtual-server/ I got the error message: Access denied : User root is not allowed to use the Virtualmin Virtual Servers (GPL) module There is an option of: Grant access only to users and groups : I tried to set it to root, munzir and reinstall but still same error, any hint? Isn't Ubuntu a supported OS? Could this be fixed so it works without tweaking or editing files? -- Munzir Taha Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Master CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 Riyadh, SA |

Try going to the Webmin Users module, clicking on the root user, and selecting 'Virtualmin Virtual Servers' in the module list .. then clicking Save. Normally this will happen automatically when you install a new module - not sure why it didn't for you. - Jamie |

Yes, I have run Webmin on Ubuntu myself.. You can check which users get granted access to new modules by going to the Webmin Configuration page, clicking on Upgrade Webmin, and seeing what usernames are in the 'New module grants' field. The root user should be listed.. - Jamie |

Yes that option sets Default behavior - grant new modules to root or admin = but=20 it says "When Webmin is upgraded, any new modules in the new version will b= e=20 granted to one or more users...". In my case I am not upgrading webmin so I= =20 guess either the wording should be corrected or that option really works ju= st=20 when upgrading webmin, which one? =2D-=20 Munzir Taha Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Master CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 Riyadh, SA |

I am not sure how webmin works with sudo users but a source of confusion fo= r=20 me is that there is only one webmin user 'root' by default in ubuntu after= =20 the installation but I can't login to webmin using 'root' and I had to use= =20 one of the users that belong to the 'admin' group (those with sudo=20 privilege). At the same time the 'New module grants' 'Default behavior - grant new modu= les=20 to root or admin' so which one in this case: root or admin? the system root= =20 user doesn't belong to the system admin group and the system user that=20 belongs to the admin group is not a webmin user. Can you please clarify=20 Jamie? =2D-=20 Munzir Taha Telecommunications and Electronics Engineer Maintainer of Fedora Arabic Translation Project https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-trans-ar Maintainer of the OpenBugs project page at http://www.arabic-fedora.org/munzir/OpenBugs.html Master CIW Designer, ICDL, MOUS, Linux+, LPI 101 Riyadh, SA |

Yes, this is a little confusing on Ubuntu systems (or any other than doesn't have a root password). On systems where some users can sudo to root and run any command, Webmin allows you to login as these users - but your actual username as far as Webmin is concerned for module grant and permission purposes is 'root'. > At the same time the 'New module grants' 'Default behavior - grant new > modules to root or admin' so which one in this case: root or admin? the system > root user doesn't belong to the system admin group and the system user that > belongs to the admin group is not a webmin user. Can you please clarify It is supposed to grant to the Webmin user root or admin, whichever exists. At least, that is what happens for me :) - Jamie |
