Greetings, We've been running Webmin 1.290 on OS X Server 10.4.7 for several months now, using it exclusively to configure and maintain BIND, and it's been working fine. The other day, though, BIND stopped responding to requests to stop or restart the server. If we click "Stop Name Server", when the next page in Webmin comes up, the button is still labelled "Stop ..." instead of being renamed to "Start Name Server". Also, rndc shows that named is still running. I haven't seen any errors in system.log or named.log. Anyone have an idea of what might be going on, or how to troubleshoot it? Thanks. -- Charles Whitaker Webmaster Open Door Networks |

When BIND is impoperly stopped like this, what does the file /var/run/named.pid contain? Webmin expects it to have the PID of the named process (when it is running). - Jamie |

Is the PID file setting on the Module Config page also set to /var/run/named.pid ? - Jamie |

Ok .. so even though Webmin tries to stop BIND, it is still running (but hung). What do you have on the Module Config page in the 'Command to stop BIND' field? - Jamie |

So does that BIND process die if you run : kill `cat /var/run/named.pid` ? - Jamie |

Yes, and another named process immediately starts. Hmmm...that's an interesting clue. Doesn't sound like a BIND problem so much as OS X restarting BIND without being asked...right? -- Charles Whitaker Webmaster Open Door Networks |

I'm not too familiar with OSX, but I heard that more recent versions introduced a new 'launchd' daemon that manages processes .. perhaps it is responsible? If so, Webmin's default configuration should call launchd to shut down BIND, rather than just killing the process. - Jamie |
