[webmin-devel] Hiding modules ...

Howdy,

Just saw the Announce of Webmin version 1.110 and would like to talk
about this ...

Would it be possible to incorporate a "translation flag" into
Webmin/Usermin in order to see everything despite if a module is
usable on this or that particular distro?

WTCO suggests not to make this reachable via Webmin/Usermin itself,
but somewhere directly in the core "config" of Webmin/usermin as

What I am thinking about is that Webmin/Usermin consists of some
emulation, ie. hard-coded HTML within a "trans-lib.pl" which emulates
everything so that translators can actually see where single lings in
lang|ulang/XX are situated in order to have a chance to translate
modules which are not suitable for their system.

I know that this is (maybe) not trivial, but if this would be possible
I think it would be loved (at least by myself).

I can see how such a feature would be useful for translators, but 
actually implementing it would be tough. Modules that aren't available 
on a particular operating system are that way for a reason - they 
depend upon some program or config file that only the supported 
systems have, so just making the modules visible won't really make 
them usable.

Sure, that's what I thought of to when I wrote the sample
.config-entry ;-)

It would be nice if you (or someone else) would take this
"Webmin-Self-Translation-Kit" (tm) ;-) in the future.

But maybe this idea would go:

WhitePaper - Translation-Module v0.0.1

The Translation-Module is intended to help translators which are not
really into shell working, making diffs manually, and are not sure how
to package translations the right way in order to release them to the
Webmin/Usermin Translation Co-Ordinator.

This module can help you out a bit and it uses basic un*xoid features
which should be available on every un*xoid system.

In fact it uses the Custom-Module only by installing a special
Translation-Section as a copy of the Custom-Module itself. So it does
not touch any Custom Commands or File Editors you already have.

If you first launch the Translation-Module it will ask you some
questions:

a) Username
This is the Username which is needed for the working directory.
Hint: Root is _not_ allowed.

b) Working directory
This is the place where your work will be stored. By default this will
be

	/home/<username>/translations/webmin

and (if installed)

	/home/<username>/translations/usermin

c) Language
Please indicate for which language you want to translate. As this
module does not know your preferences there is no default and this
module will not be available without something inserted here.
Please tell this module a language in ISO-way, which means:
	de for German (Deutsch)
	fr for French (Francais)
	and so on.

d) ISO-Code of your Language
If you are contributing a language which is not yet listed in

	lang_list.txt

as described on http://www.webmin.com/modules.html#newlang this module
will generate a lang_list.txt according to your entry here with values
from http://www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets.
Default value will be

	iso-8859-1

which takes the commonly used Latin-1 range. However you can change
this later to those ISO-setting which goes best with your language.
If in doubt please ask the "Webmin/Usermin Translation Co-Ordinator
(WTCO)" at we...@we... for assistance.

e) Module to translate
Please indicate which module you want to translate. If you do not put
in anything here this module will not be available. It's a good thing
to start with one module and then go ahead with the next instead of
being presented with the complete stuff which would be quite a lot.

f) Your Name
If you want to be on the official List of contributors at
www.webmin.com this will be essential.

g) Your eMail
If you want to send your files directly to WTCO this will be essential
as well.

After all this is done the follwing will happen.

1. Webmin will copy the following parts of your favourite
Webmin-Module.

	1.1	webmin/<module>/config.info to
		<transhome>/webmin/<module>/config.info

	1.2	webmin/<module>/config.info.<lang> to
		<transhome>/webmin/<module>/config.info
		if it already exists.

	1.3	webmin/<module>/module.info to
		<transhome>/webmin/<module>/module.info

	1.4	webmin/<module>/lang/en to
		<transhome>/webmin/<module>/lang/en

	1.5	webmin/<module>/lang/<lang> to
		<transhome>/webmin/<module>/lang/<lang>
		if it already exists

2. Webmin will copy the following parts of your favourite
Usermin-Module.

	2.1	usermin/<module>/config.info to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/config.info

	2.2	usermin/<module>/config.info.<lang> to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/config.info
		if it already exists.

	2.3	usermin/<module>/module.info to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/module.info

	2.4	usermin/<module>/lang/en to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/lang/en

	2.5	usermin/<module>/lang/<lang> to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/lang/<lang>
		if it already exists

	2.6	usermin/<module>/ulang/en to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/en

	2.7	usermin/<module>/ulang/<lang> to
		<transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/<lang>
		if it already exists.

3. If available Webmin will automatically make a diff between the en
and <lang> if available. As Example the follwoing command would be
run.

	sed -e 's/=3D.*//' en | grep -v '^#' | sort >/tmp/english
	sed -e 's/=3D.*//' de | grep -v '^#' | sort >/tmp/german
	diff /tmp/english /tmp/german >diff.txt

Those diffs are stored within

	<transhome>/usermin/<module>/lang/diff.txt

as example.

After this completion you will be redirected to the Translation-Module
itself. Webmin has (as example) automatically arranged the following
=46ile Viewers/Editors for you.

View <transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/en
View <transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/diff.txt
Edit <transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/<lang>

which will be opend in new windows.

In addition to the normal Custom-Module you will be able to do the
following.

	Make a new diff for this module
	Apply my changes
	Revoke my changes
	Send this to WTCO

Applying the changes means that your files are being copied into the
live system of Webmin/Usermin to actually see the changes. Before this
is done a

	<lang>.ORIG

will be placed in

	<transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/

Revoking the changes means that

	<transhome>/usermin/<module>/ulang/<lang>.ORIG

will be copied back into the live system of Webmin/Usermin.

Send this to WTCO means, that your files will be tar.gz'ed and sent by
eMail to the Webmin/Usermin Translation Co-Ordinator at
we...@we... who will review the technical correctness of
the files and then releases or denies the update.

No, sorry - not at this time.
At this time I can only write WhitePapers in order to give programmers
hints on how things could work ;-)

This is really bad ... I am such a lousy programmer ...
