Try double clicking on it (assuming your using the GHOME Midnight Commander or similar.) If that doesn't work, then you have to use the "dreaded" terminal emulator. In GNOME's "Start Menu," it is under Utilities->GNOME Terminal and has an icon that has the GNOME foot sitting on what looks like a cheap TV (this is in RH 6.2, your experience may vary.) Once in the terminal, you'll probably see a DOS looking thing like this: [username@yourcomputer username] _ ^ | Your username is (probably) the name of your home directory It works very similar to DOS, only there is only one drive "/" When 'cd'ing, you can't 'cd..' you have to 'cd ..' note space. For a directory listing, type 'ls'. When executing a local program (say like you're in A: and typing 'setup'), you have to put './' in front, (like './setup', or './install.sh') Now, I hope you know a little DOS. > As root, type: > > ../setup.sh Oops...Clearly, I meant: ./setup.sh Two dots will not do. (BTW-The ./ tells your shell to execute a file in the current directory rather than a file in the PATH. The current directory is not in your path for security reasons. Your new Unix and Linux books that you're rushing out to buy right now will tell you more about why.) One more piece of advice for a newbie...the webmin-devel list is for development questions and discussion. Webmin-l is the general discussion list. -- Joe Cooper <jo...@sw...> Affordable Web Caching Proxy Appliances http://www.swelltech.com |

<mode=preach> You need a couple of good Unix and Linux books, before you beging fiddling with Webmin. Webmin is wonderful, and it does make things more apparent to newbies (the options are /right there/, instead of tucked away inside a bunch of config files spread all over the place). But, it does not make system administration /easier/. You still need to understand the system. </mode> Now, to answer the question, and encourage you to charge in with both guns blazing (because clearly this isn't a production system--so break it as fast as you can, you'll learn a lot in the fixing): As root, type: ./setup.sh However, since you're on Red Hat, go the newbie (and oldie route as well) and install from the RPM: rpm -Uvh webmin-whatever-version.rpm This works nicely and keeps the packages under the maintenence of RPM. This is a /good/ thing. Don't let self-proclaimed hacker types tell you any different. Package managers are the friend of people who don't have a bunch of time to waste on keeping up with where everything is installed and why it is there. (I make packages, when installing them, if Red Hat doesn't provide them. Tarballs are a last resort when the install is too complex for me to easily figure out how to make it into an RPM.) Enjoy. As you can tell by the subject line I am real new at Linux. I found Webmin and it looked good. Have installed it and am trying to "run" setup.sh. Now for the dumb question.............. Just how do you run setup.sh. I am using Redhat 7.0. George (sitting in corner, with pointedd hat on.) <:-o |

Hi, are you sure that webmin is up and running ? I don't think that webmi is supposed to run on System 9. It may work on MacOs X. Webmin is dependant (tell me Jamie if I'm wrong) on the perl runtime (should be OK) and on the filesystem organisation. MacOs 9 doesn't have a proper filesystem hierarchie in order to run webmin "as is". MacOs X should work. I welcome any and all pointers. I'd suggest at a minimum running it as an unprivileged unix user, and granting login access only to a webmin user who cannot change the config of any module (or access the webmin users module). A chroot environment would be good, but you wouldn't want the demo users to be able to screw up the demo for each other, so maybe even that wouldn't be enough .. Unfortunately, webmin wasn't designed for this and I don't know of anyone who has set it up. My suggestion would be to set up a chroot'd, non-root demo and then see what bad things the demo user can do :) - Jamie |

Hey folks, What are the gotchas I should look out for when setting up an online (completely accessible to the internet) Webmin? I don't think Webmin ACLs even begin to address the security issues with this plan...so I'm going to go to much greater lengths to insure that no damage can be done by Webmin. My plan is to only include a few specific modules, which will be hardcoded to edit fake configuration files--possibly new randomly named ones for every user. I've even considered running a new instance of Webmin for each user, in a tmp directory, on a randomly selected port from a pool for directories...this addresses the problem of locking and multiple users playing with the same configuration options at the same time. Obviously, I don't want to run it as root, so what do I need to modify to run it as a thoroughly unpriviledged user? I'm thinking I will create a chrooted environment for a "webmin-demo" user account with no permissions other than reading and writing to the new and fake environment. Anyone done something like this? Are there any examples of Webmins that have been modified for demonstration use? Anyone have ideas for how this might be implemented simply, elegantly, and in 25 lines of perl? ;-) I've only begun thinking about this, so I'm not committed to any one plan of attack. I welcome any and all pointers. Thanks! -- Joe Cooper <jo...@sw...> Affordable Web Caching Proxy Appliances http://www.swelltech.com |

hmmmmm, That may be all and well, but that append seems to be corrupting the in hash. However I spotted that I have not updated minserv.pl and that POSTed data is being manipulated in there. That code is only really used when a request is POST, but also contains GET-style parameters in the URL. For example, if you had a form like <form method=post action='foo.cgi?bar=1'> <input name=smeg value='2'> </form> In this case, webmin would pick up both the bar and smeg parameters. There was some good reason for including this feature, but I can't remember it now :) However, it doesn't really cause any harm as 99% of all forms will have either GET or POST parameters only. - Jamie |

That's pretty much correct - the code is designed to handle the case where a request has both GET and POST data. The request method may be POST, but the URL includes ?foo=bar&smeg=spod parameters as well .. - Jamie "Ryan W. There are two types of requests used in this case (I assume you're familiar with them): GET and POST. GET will pass the key/value pairs in on the request line, ie http://www.myhost.com/cgi-bin/this.cgi?user=rwm&pass=test This is trivial to parse out. However, POST will pass the key/value pairs in the environmental variable QUERY_STRING. It appears like the code is appending this to the already existing %in hash. Kinda odd, I'm sure Jamie can shed some more light on this. I hope this sheds some light on your problem. If you need any more detail let me know. Hi all, I recently upgraded web-lib.pl on a project that I am working on and suddenly my posting of data goes arseways. Offending function is ReadParse. Can anybody tell me what this is line is doing ? if ($in) { $in .= "&".$ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}; } ## new POST handling # ReadParse([&assoc]) # Fills the given associative array with CGI parameters, or uses the global # %in if none is given. Also sets the global variables $in and @in sub ReadParse { local $a = $_[0] ? $_[0] : \%in; local $i; if ($ENV{'REQUEST_METHOD'} eq 'POST') { read(STDIN, $in, $ENV{'CONTENT_LENGTH'}); } if ($ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}) { if ($in) { $in .= "&".$ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}; } else { $in = $ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}; } } ## old POST handling # ReadParse([&assoc]) # Fills the given associative array with CGI parameters, or uses the global # %in if none is given. Also sets the global variables $in and @in sub ReadParse { local $a = $_[0] ? $_[0] : \%in; local $i; if ($ENV{'REQUEST_METHOD'} eq 'POST') { read(STDIN, $in, $ENV{'CONTENT_LENGTH'}); } else { $in = $ENV{'QUERY_STRING'}; } |

Hello Everyone This is my first Email to this list. Since a few weeks i work on a project to build a better Navigation as the standard one. Since the new Webmin 0.84 you can use "themes" and so i build a new theme with the features of my project. You can find the project here: http://www.gehrigal.de/gehrigal This functiones are at this moment integrated: - Basic Webminmoduls - Wbt-File for Install - Navigation on the left site to have fast access to other modules - .... To Developers: If you want to help me please write to : we...@ge... To Users: Please test it and give me a feedback Thanks for your support bye Alexander PS.: Question to we...@ge... please! ******************************************************* Hallo Allerseits Dies ist meine erste Email an diese Mailing-Liste Seit einigen Wochen Arbeite ich an einer neuen und besseren Navigation für Webmin.
