While this is beyond the scope of the Webmin list. Thunderbird also relies on you having the correct protocol to test the connection, ie normal password, encrypted password. I've encountered this before also. You should first use a Konsole and determine that the mail server is responding. If that works use the standard ports 25 and 587 if memory serves. If you setup the server you should also know what protocols you are using whether it's normal password or encrypted.
