From: Prodos Greetings. SUMMARY I am trying to add: *.mydomainname.com. ... in the section section called "Add Address Record" but keep getting an error message. DETAILS This is how I get to "Add Address Record" ... I log into my WEBMIN and then ... Servers >> Bind DNS Server >> "Add Address Record" >> [then I enter my domain name in the "Find zones marching:" search box under the heading "Existing DNS Zones"] >> "Edit Master Zone" >> [I click the link under the big letter "A" which has under it Address (4)] >> Address Records And now I have a form called "Add Address Record" I fill it out as follows: Name: *.mydomainname.com. [Note there is a full-stop at the end] Address: I use the same one as all the other names listed on the page i.e. mydomainname.com ... www.mydomainname.com ... ftp.mydomainname.com ... etc.] Update: It is checked on "Yes" and I leave that alone Time-To-Live: It is checked on "Default" and I leave that as is. I click the button "Create" But I get this error message: Failed to save record : '*.mydomainname.com.' is not a valid record name [I have, of course, replaced my actual domain name with "mydomainname.com" in this error message.] OTHER INFORMATION A coder who did a job for me last year created a [ *.mydomainname.com. ] type of entry for a different domain - one that was set up to generate subdomains "on the fly" (if that's the right term for it). I've looked at the settings for that other *.mydomainname.com. but can't see anything that can help me understand. HELP? Any suggestions or tips please? Is there something else I need to do? Thank you! :-) Best Wishes, PRODOS http://prodos.thinkertothinker.com "Boring updates on exciting projects." |
