Thanks for that information .. I didn't know about that --version option. I will use it in the next Webmin release in preference to the RPM version, which isn't as reliable and may not even be available.

Getting the version string from the RPM should be fine (unless RPM is
not supported by the OS or there are multiple RPMs installed), but
Dovecot does provide other ways to query its version:

# rpm -q dovecot
dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3
# dovecot --version
0.99.13

Apparently, this option is not well-documented, but it is in the ChangeLog:
