This is what i get with BOTH the commans.

[root@alpha ~]# mysql -u root -password=3DMY_ROOT_PASSWORD mysql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using
password: YES)

[root@alpha ~]# mysqladmin -u root --password=3DROOT_MYSQL_PASSWORD status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'
