I always use command line for speed/precision and gui when I'm laid
back. That's the reason most people use a command shell.

Seriously though, if you want to use a fast non-java GUI interface, use
WinSCP2/WinSCP3 to exchange files but if you want to edit in place, use
a command shell.

Java does take time to set up. The faster the desktop, the less time it
takes.
