There is three things that causes the eratic behavior.  Screwed up Cache which I think you've already purge, pressing the back button when you are reading a message instead of pressing the return to mailbox botton at the top or bottom of the email screen, and lastly if she receives a new message at the exact time she is going back into her mailbox it shifts the list.

Best bet remove the entries from her book and recreate them.
