Hi Thomas, Since you have upgraded to a new version of your OS (and subsequently new versions of all of your applications), I would advise you proceed with caution and restore only the files you need. The configuration file backup is extremely useful in a situation where you are restoring from a system backup and want to get the latest version of your configuration files (and in this case you can just unroll the tarball right into /etc and expect everything to work fine). Or, it can be used as a "butt saver" as you've discovered, in case you screw up a working configuration...in that case you pull out the one bad file. In your case, however, a wholesale configuration file overwrite with old versions will be quite calamitous (OK, probably only for some files...but knowing which files is where the fun comes in). If I were in your situation, I would restore into a temporary directory, make a backup copy of the "new" /etc directory, and then copy in the files for each service, one at a time. Restart the service, test it as thoroughly as you can, and then move on to the next. I'm betting theres only a few (maybe a dozen) files in /etc that actually need to be restored--most of my full-service (web, mail, database, Subversion, etc.) servers have about that many. Of course, some services put data elsewhere, which is simply lost if you don't have a backup. Databases store data and much configuration in /var, for example. Hope this helps.
