    Hi,

I'm rather new to linux and squid so please be gentle! The problem... I'm trying to set up squid so that my kids are only able to access certain websites. Because of their age I'd rather have what I believe is called a 'whitelist' (which will be quite short) than a huge and unmaintainable 'blacklist'. I've read all the documentation and googled the problem for a few days but have come up with nothing which shows how this can be achieved in webmin. I have managed to play with ALCs and have blocked certain sites but allowing individual sites though has stumped me.

    Any advice much appreciated.

Many thanks for the reply however I'm still having problems...

I can't work out how to get Webmin to open the config file. I'm sure I'm just being thick but I can't find the option anywhere. Anyway, I thought I'd find the file on the linux box and edit it from there. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to open it because I don't have root privilages. I'm using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop installed.  Normally it asks for my password when I try to alter system stuff and it allows me access, but not with this file or the folder which it is in.

I'm sure there's a command line way of opening a file in linux using the SUDO prefix but I'm not sure how to do that either. Aaaaagh!

      Any help, again, much appreciated!

Look at the Squid module configuration - the configuration file is listed in there.

So long as webmin comes up with the squid options when you click on the squid module, it is opening the config file.

The other way is to SU to root yourself and then you can do anything - I am not going to tell you how to do this since it can be very dangerous and it sounds like you need to learn a little more about Linux/Unix in general before you are messing around with SU (or even sudo for that matter)

If you are unable to do it through webmin, I would recommend a book or two on how to administer Linux/Unix before you try to do things from the command line instead of the GUI, which has safeguards in it that the command line does not.

Here is a good writeup on how to do a basic squid setup and do white/black lists, as well as how to setup the authentication engine as needed. http://www.screaming-penguin.com/node/3871/
