Webmin 1.730 installed via portage (newest there). It says there is a newer version (1.760) - trying to perform the update proces gives:

But there is still 1.730 running. Even after restarting webmin.
Does portage contain the 1.760 version yet? If so, you should probably upgrade using that, or else you'll be over-writing the files from the 1.730 package with ones Webmin downloads.
No, portage does not contain 1.760 yet.
This bug report is about the fact, that webmin itself offers an update to 1.760, when I click the button "Upgrade Webmin now", it CLAIMS to do something, it CLAIMS that this something was successfull, and then still hasn't updated.
This is absolutely detached from whether the newer version is or is not in portage. It's questionable webmin behavior.
That's a problem - Webmin shouldn't offer an upgrade in this case.
Is there a command you can run on a Gentoo system to detect if Webmin was installed from a portage package?
There are several such commands. I know it has been installed from portage because I did so myself.
The most basic, slower but always present is
emerge --search webmin
[ Results for search key : webmin ]

Latest version available: 1.730
Latest version installed: 1.730
Size of files: 21,944 KiB

Then there is "eix" and "equery" which require optional packages installed, so in case you want something fast, check for eix but have emerge --search as fallback.
eix webmin
[I] app-admin/webmin

Ok, the next release of Webmin will prevent an upgrade from a tar.gz when it is installed from Portage.
