I have created a unix user. when I try to convert it to samba user, a error raised:

Failed to convert user : /usr/bin/pdbedit failed :

new password:retype new password:

But I can use "pdbedit -a" to add the user to samba from console.

The next Webmin release will fix this issue.

    Regression?

This failed for me today in the way described in this thread.

    Webmin 1.801 / Ubuntu 16.04

fbachofner - can you create a user using pdbedit -a from the command line, and enter an empty password?

  • fbachofner

    sudo pdbedit -a foo
Failed to add entry for user foo.
    on Samba version 4.3.9-Ubuntu

wierd -- earlier today I added 4 Samba users with this method (although with password -- but that fails now too)

    Doh!

Sorry, I didn't have the foo user setup on the system first.

Now adding foo to Samba "sudo pdbedit -a foo" without password works

    Conversion still fails, however

fbachofner - what's the exact error you are getting from Webmin?

    pdbedit -a username does work!
    samba-tool user create
    samba-tool user add
Webmin Convert User all give error codes

What's exact error in webmin though?

  • Anders Wikström

Probably not Webmin bug but a Ubuntu issue.

I'm getting this error when trying to convert users (Webmin 1.801 / Ubuntu 16.04):

Failed to convert user : /usr/bin/pdbedit failed :
new password:retype new password:Failed to read passwords.

However, I am not seeing this issue on my other machine (Webmin 1.801 / Ubuntu 14.04).

I'm having the same issue. pdbedit works, but not webmin. Same messages as Jordan Marshall on Ubuntu 16.04.1

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 16.04.1 and Webmin 1.8.01 today. When trying to convert users I get this error:

Failed to convert user : /usr/bin/pdbedit failed :
new password:retype new password:Failed to read passwords.

However, I can do it from the command line just using: pdbedit -a username

We just released Webmin version 1.810 - can you give that a try?

The update to 1.8.10 appeared for me. After updating I still have this problem. I see Wikstrom has indicated that this is not a Webmin problem. I guess I can understand that, but it remains a "feature" that currently does not work in webmin.

Certanily. I'm sorry for my ignorance, and it's late here. but I tried to update the package (I used the repo instead of downloading the .deb package for my initial installaion) This is what I get when I try to update:

W: Failed to fetch http://download.webmin.com/download/repository/dists/sarge/InRelease Could not connect to download.webmin.com:80 (108.60.199.109)

    Any help?

As I have written before it is not a WEBMIN issue but there can be a workaround...
To me it appears to be a Samba issue as samba-tool doesn't work at all!
pdbedit -a username does work but
samba-tool user create give error code
samba-tool user add give error code
Webmin Convert User give error code

Ok, I see the cause of this - in newer Samba versions, the pdbedit command needs a extra flag when webmin calls it. This will be fixed in the next release.

Hello Jamie, anything we could to so we can circunvent this issue till next release? thx.

Just realized pdbedit on CLI for an unix user will do. No problem.
