Dear all, I agree with Phil: "I really like the themes idea. This involves a new directory under the c= ss directory all you need to do is tell config.php the name of the new directory (theme) under the css directory and the whole system changes its look! We could even make this different for different users quite easily." Ofcourse we need to split the user interface code from the other code in = a gentle manor to prevent to have to update every theme when one sql is modified or one field is added to a form. With best regards, Dick Stins p.s. It's some color combination are ergonomic better then others. There = are also colors which are not able to see by some people (color blindness). There has been a lot of scientific research at this, but be aware that no= t only colors on the screen interfere but also colors from external sources like sunlight, colors in the room, ... That is why it would be nice when people can choose their own theme. This design looks great! What is the intention with the GO TO selection box? One point - design seems to have adopted the old horizontal format. Steve's new design that I recently committed to the CVS is more vertical than the old horizontal way - you may want to have a look at this - I like the fact that we can get more links visible on the page with his way. It makes good use of the whole screen - even works at 600x800. I have had lectures from Steve about how the visual appeal is important for marketing purposes and getting initial buy in from potential users .... and since everyone will have different view on what looks good I really like the themes idea. This involves a new directory under the css directory all you need to do is tell config.php the name of the new directory (theme) under the css directory and the whole system changes its look! We could even make this different for different users quite easily. This may sound like me pouring cold water over your idea and I desperately don't want to put you off contributing. Its not that your design is not great... it is. However, I must say that I not keen to re-invent the core GUI every couple of months. Re-working old scripts always gives me the nasty negative feeling of "if only I'd done it this way in the first place I wouldn't be wasting time doing it again" - GUI re-invention seems like a never ending circle and I prefer to focus on pushing out the accounting functionality. Thats not to say that if we can extend the themes concept to allow a few more bells and whistles ... then lets do it! Perhaps we should get stuck into the multi-language stuff first then revisit the GUI after that.
