Steve, Images and other binaries like .doc and .... do need to be inserted in CVS as binaries (special option), otherwise they will contain errors when they are checked out. Only in special conditions (Phil seems to hava no problems with it) there no errors. I guess that the condition is that when it is inserted and checked out at the same platform, then have a chance that this is no issue. Allthough I already asked Phil to insert binaries as binaries to CVS, I guess he had other priorities and it still has to be done.
