Steve, The advantages of WBEM/CIM come from a single, federated data model that addresses everything from the low level hardware, through the network, to storage and applications. SNMP does not and will not do this. CMIP went in this path, although CIM/WBEM's goal is to be more closely associated to what the providers and consumers of the data need, vs OSI abstractions, and to run over web technologies such as HTTP. The values are to the consumer of the data - and in development reuse of the model. One thing that this industry gets beaten up for, is that we have thousands of products with thousands of MIBs (and MIBs are good for reading, but not writing management data). So, the questions are how to do configuration with the same data that you use for monitoring, and why not bring together the 80% of common data, into a common model? These are the goals of CIM. If my network consists of SNMP and CMIP devices, then I will have to design SNMP and CMIP enabled providers. My manager (WBEM Client) will send a request to my CIMOM server and this request is passed onto the appropriate provider. This process is slower than a simple SNMP,CMIP manager talking directly to an SNMP/CMIP agent. What are the advantages of using WBEM or incorporating it into an existing management application? Also, in my provider , must I hard-code the SNMP OIDs values or is there some kind of mapping between CIM and SNMP MIBS ? Thanks.
