I successfully installed wanem on hard drive and also on virtual machine. I installed it on debian squeeze and wheezy and also on ubuntu 12 and 13. There is nice instruction on this forum, there is link https://sourceforge.net/p/wanem/discussion/711493/thread/0396abb7/. The only things you have to do is copy files from root directory and var/WANem. Install apache or other web server. All steps are written in this nice instruction. The only thing for me which don't run is disconnection but also it don't work on knoppix.
There are some problems with the lates version of php 5.4. The Call-time pass-by-reference is deprecated so you have to change all functions in wanem php scripts(http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8971261/php-5-4-call-time-pass-by-reference-easy-fix-available), the rest should work. Try to carfully follow the instructions and all should be fine.
WANem is only www interface for Netem + some script to configure network and some scripts (which don't work for me) for disconnection, thats all, and php scripts are mostly phpnetemgui.
