Menu

To edit menu:
MATE: open the menu to System>>Preferences>>Look and Feel>>Main menu manager.
Openbox: open the menu to Utilities>>Obmenu-generator>>Edit Menu Schema, which will open that file in the text editor for you to edit.

In Openbox: There are instructions inside the menu-schema when you open it to edit, that explain how to edit out the installer entries and customize
the editable menu sections to suit your particular set-up. The middle section of that file is the automated portion, that will add/subtract/modify entries
as you load or modify programs. Obmenu-generator is a dynamic menu program, when you install new programs it will add entries to the menu automatically.

Desktop menu entries:
I modded a lot of the .desktop files in /usr/share/applications to give a short description of what the program actually does in the "Name" category. Too many one word names in the menu that didn't give a clue as to what the program actually did, common sense suggests it helps folks if you're a little descriptive, so I added extra info where needed so people new to the system can get oriented easily and quickly. I also modded quite a few to prevent redundant menu entries, but left a couple extras where apropos.
Updating any of those programs however, will likely change it back, but you can retain a copy of the descriptive .desktop file, or change the new one again.
As of August 2025 Vuu-do now includes the Vuu-do App Info (vai12) app with short descriptions of installed programs taken directly from their package
description in apt, this may be very useful for folks new to the system, or people like me who test a lot of programs and sometimes forget what they installed. ;)

I usually take care to try and take out as many of the larger svg's in the system to avoid slowing down the menu, but I have to say, the Obmenu-generator
menu that's in the Openbox versions, handles large svg's really well, caches them at start as nice little png's, so it's always fast after that.
Catches and adds any changes made super-quick too. It's really a great menu, would love to see it ported to Mate.
