Hey Jason/all, Some interesting things. I think a trend is beginning to emerge if you go with movies instead of customers. Playing around with those error files from your method I noticed some cool stuff: - If you could eliminate error on the 10 worst movies (total error, not normalized), you could improve your RMSE by 0.05 - Worst movies seem to pretty recent (Napolean Dynamite, Spotless Mind, etc), probably because they have many more ratings - Worst movies actually have a VERY normal distribution, only flattened (i.e. uniform with a bulge in the middle) - Best movies have a high skewed to the right distribution, almost looks like an exponential curve. Hey guys, I notice we have all been eager beavers working on the software engineering deliverables 2 :D As a reminder, it's due Monday (as in like 3 days), so we all need to get working on it. I have documented almost all of what we are calling the Netflix core, the classes that handle the datasets. Everybody else needs to fill in their pieces. What you need to do: * In the high level design, provide a paragraph overview of your approach. * Copy & paste this paragraph as the first paragraph under Detailed Design Information and expand on your approach * Look over the design issues under high level design and see how those relate to your approach, then fill that section in on the detailed design issues under your approach * Trace all applicable requirements for your approach under Trace of Requirements to Design You can look at the Netflix Core to get an idea of what to do. Good luck everybody and have fun working on your ultra-fun deliverables 2! If you have questions, let me know. Hey guys, Jason and I went over the SVN and cleaned things up a bit. For all our approaches and code, we created a personalized folder under the "include" and "src" directories for everybody. We thought it would be cleaner to have everybody's individual approach in their own folder. So I would put all my code under "include\becker" and "src\becker". Hey guys, I was surfing the forums at Netflix and saw that they were advertising a data mining conference that has a section dedicated to the Netflix prize. I think we should think about writing a paper for it at the end of the project. Published papers always look good on the ole resume. http://www.cs.uic.edu/~liub/Netflix-KDD-Cup-2007.html : Participants of the Netflix Prize competition are encouraged to submit papers describing your algorithms and experiences, successful or not, regardless whether you are currently on the leaderboard. Even if you are not at the top of the leaderboard, we are sure that many of you have great algorithms and other interesting and important observations to share in the interests of science. Hey guys, I created an FTP server on one of Jimmy's lab computers. This will allow us to share large data files and stuff that's too big to go in the SVN (small data files less than a meg are OK to put in the SVN). If you are on campus, the IP is: 10.173.215.134 To get into FTP, the username is "vorbb-tech" and the password is again the normal one. If you are off campus, grab Hamachi and join the network VORBB-TECH with the password being the normal one. The computer is called jsl-4500. I wrote up a program to convert the 2 GB ASCII text data files provided by Netflix into a 500 MB packed binary data file. There is a program you can use to do the conversion in the svn (takes about 15 minutes) or you can download the already converted binary file from the FTP. One the code related side of things, the past two days I coded up some classes that will let us easily access the Netflix data. It is memory intensive, because it loads the 500 MB dataset into memory. However, once in memory, everything is really fast. So you can go through the 100+ million ratings in about 95 seconds. Not too shabby. I can probably optimize that number a bit too. I haven't gotten a chance to test/comment very much, so if you do take a look, be warned. If you find bugs, let me know and I'll fix them ASAP. There is also a test program in there that demonstrates how to load in the data. Well that's all for now folks. Sincerely, Brian C. Hey all, I just created a VORBB-TECH mailing list (sort of like a Yahoo! Group or email based forum). You email this address and the email gets forwarded to everybody on the list (unless they set their options differently). Should be a convenient way to communicate.
