This is the MAC-Address table aging time, you are referring to. You can use the 'mac-address-table aging-time 0' command to have the mac-addresses only age out when the link to the switch port goes down. We have the same thing happen on our network but it is effectively not a problem since we don't use dynamic vlans with servers, and as soon as a client does some traffic the switch queries VMPS and puts it back in the correct vlan. Subject: [OpenVMPS-devel] Switch "forgetting" macs after a while ? Hi, I have a situation with several Hosts on one port, via an unmanaged switch. I know its not a good idea, but this cofiguration has worked for me until now with Workstations. The Default vlan is --NONE-- so unknown MACs are simply dropped. I now have 3 servers on one port, and one of these can go for hours without generating traffic. And it disappears from the network (no longer responds to ping). If I didable VMPS, i.e. static vlans, the effect disappears. I suspect that - the switch caches the MACs it sees on a port for a while, - and when it does a VMPS confirm (every hour), it requests VMPS authen for MACs that it remembers on that port. - if a host does not generate traffic for a few hours, the switch forgets it, and therefore doesn't answer any traffic addresses to that MAC, or request re-authentation Am I making sense here? :-) Can anyone suggest a worksround?
