Version 0.4.0 allows configurable colors for keys pressed. Allowing separate colors for each input and input type (key press, MIDI input, etc) would enhance a users ability to play along with a MIDI sequence.
Version 0.4.0 is really ancient, published more than 10 years ago.
Version 0.8.6 was published a few days ago, and already has several configurable highlighting palettes, including different colors for each MIDI channel.

The following screenshots are taken on Linux, with a dark theme, and VMPK 0.8.6.
There are four highlighting palettes. You may select one from the Preferences dialog.
The first one is the single color palette, in this case edited to use a red color instead of the default
The second is the double color palette. One color to highlight the natural notes (white keys) and another for the alterations (black keys). The keys background color is also customizable.
The third is the MIDI Channels palette. There are 16 customizable colors, one for each MIDI channel. Usually VMPK receives a single MIDI channel, but you may change this setting in the MIDI Connections dialog, using the "MIDI Omni" checkbox.
The fourth is the Chromatic scale palette. There are 12 colors, one for each note in the chromatic scale.
Thank you!

By the way, if you like to play along with MIDI sequences, then maybe you would like to use this program: https://dmidiplayer.sourceforge.io/
