I've tried to use VMPK connected to my yamaha keyboard via a usb cable, and everythings seems to work ok except that I cannot see any notes show colour below G3, even though I can hear the notes on the computer (within VMPK on the Mac). What am I doing wrong?

Please post some information about your VMPK configuration. First, in the Notes toolbar (Menu View->Notes), what are the values of "Base Octave" and "Transpose"?. Then in your Preferences dialog, what are the values of "Number of keys" and "Starting key"? Finally: which MIDI note is what you call G3? (for scientific pitch notation it is 55 although Yamaha uses another nomenclature). Please show the note names over the piano keys (Menu View->Note Names).

Another issue: maybe your keyboard has some MIDI channel split feature activated around the G3 key, so the notes below and above G3 use different MIDI channels, but VMPK by default listens a single MIDI Channel (omni mode off). In this case, you may switch "Omni Mode" to ON in MIDI Connections dialog, and then if you want it in Preferences select "MIDI Channels" as "Note highlight color".

    Thanks Pedro.
    Base Octave is 3.
    Transpose is 0
    Number of keys =61
    Starting key = C

The lowest note displaying a colour is as shown on the attached image.

I've tried switching OMNI mode on, and it looks like that has solved the problem...
    Thanks.
You have been a great help. It is really appreciated.
