I have added a download area to my blog <http://www.bradlongo.wordpress.com> where I have made all my rpms available, and I also have a tutorial on building rpms if anyone is interested. They rpms should all be available to anyone on vpython's download page. Some of you may remember a while ago I was working on text editor for vpython called vpython design. It is only for unix machines. The tar file is available on my download page. I got really busy last year and work kind of halted on it. However, I decided I would be willing to continue to work on it if anyone still here has any interest in it so please let me know. The printing functions do not currently work so stay away from them. Dependencies: vypthon-4.beta26 gnome-python2-gtksourceview gnome-python2-gtkspell pygtk2 There may be more but I think that's it. To run it extract the tar file, and then cd into the vpd directory. Then run ./vpd.py. I haven't made an rpm yet, but I will work on one if there is interest in the package. -- Brad Longo North Carolina State University Aerospace Engineering/Applied Mathematics Raleigh, NC, USA cell: 862-266-7066 email: bj...@nc... |

I don't see any reason to translate working Physlets from Java to Python. They work fine as they are. It would be a different matter if one were to be inspired by a Physlet to do something new, something for which VPython was particularly appropriate. I don't know how many of you may already be familiar with the Physlets project: http://webphysics.davidson.edu/Applets/Applets.html Would it be worth the trouble to translate some of the applets over to VPython? How many VPython scripts already exist that cover equivalent material? Joel |

Hello: I am trying to run VPython, which uses OpenGL. I have a PC running WinXP Pro (Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600). My computer has an AGP Nvidia GeForce2 MX 100/200 video card. I have updated the Driver Version to 7.1.8.9. (Th motherboard is an EPoX MVP3C2.) With that video card, I get this error message from the Python shell when I try to run any VPython program: "pythonw.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.", and WinXP wants to send an error message to Microsoft. I get that message even when I set display "Hardware Acceleration" to "None". I have been trying to solve this problem for a long time, and I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. |

Brad, you made the same (natural) mistake I made. He's using a Linux distribution named "Arch", not Fedora nor Ubuntu. I was just working on packaging vpython-3.2.9. It's giving me that mutex error, which has been popping up. I think it has something to do with the lock class in vthread.h, but I'm not too sure. I just glanced at it. I don't think there is anything wrong with the code since we know it works, but something is going on when it is trying to compile. The other day I was talking to a friend, and he heard that there are some differences between gcc 4.3 on Ubuntu and Fedora, which probably are accounting for some of the install issues users are experiencing. If the code runs on Ubuntu then it will run on any distribution regardless of arch-type. If the code doesn't run then the reason for any errors are going to have to do something with differences between the two distributions. Fixing this error on Fedora for an x86 kernel will almost deffinitly solve Siddhardh's issues on x86_64 linux. I don't think the archtype has too much to do with it? Siddhardh I see you are compiling version 3.2.9 as well. Do you use Fedora or Ubuntu? -- Brad Longo North Carolina State University Aerospace Engineering/Applied Mathematics Raleigh, NC, USA cell: 862-266-7066 email: bj...@nc... |

(Hmm. Looks like this was bounced from the list because my mail address changed: updated address and reposted; apologies if you get this twice) I've just built visual- 4.beta26 on Fedora 9 (having upgraded from Fedora 5). In order to do this I had to make a couple of changes: src/util/errors.cpp: add #include <cstdliv> below other #includes. src/Makefile: add - mt to the boost libraries at line 201 (in all POSIX- like systems), so have: the line: $(GTHREAD_LIBS) - lboost_python- mt - lboost_thread- mt) I see this last change is also present in the darwin section. Perhaps this reflects some name change in the boost libraries (I presume - mt means multithreaded. There are non- mt versions of the boost libraries other than boost_thread). After these, beta26 seems to build and run OK. Roger. |

From the build log: ./core/util/errors.cpp: In function 'void cvisual::write_note(std::string, int, std::string)': ./core/util/errors.cpp:40: error: 'getenv' was not declared in this scope This is a gcc-4.3 problem: http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.3/porting_to.html Probably easy to solve for a c++ guru.
