Hi all, I want to dock all Vpython windows into a single window in Linux. Vpython windows are uncontrollable, they just fly off all over monitor at the start. I found this on net but not much useful (I didn't understand :-)) http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-list/2008-December/692545.html Can anyone provide a small snippet on how to do this (wxPython, PyGtk anything goes). Thanks in advance, dksr |

I've seen a slightly later MacBook Pro with NVIDIA GeForce graphics which fully supports materials in VPython, and I've also seen an AirBook that does materials fine. I've seen a fairly recent rather macho desktop Mac with Radeon graphics which doesn't show materials at all. I don't know quite what to make of this, other than the possibility that the Apple drivers for Radeon graphics aren't quite right. You said you weren't sure whether you were seeing materials corrrectly. In material_test.py do you see a map of the Earth wrapped around the sphere labeled "earth"? The table it sits on should look like blond wood. Bruce Sherwood Joe Heafner wrote: > On May 31, 2009, at 11:23 PM, Bruce Sherwood wrote: > >> What is the graphics hardware on your Mac? I've finally upgraded to Visual 5.1 and MacPython 2.6.2. I played with VIDLE and the only things about it I specifically noticed were that it doesn't have an IDLE icon (it has the generic Mac app icon instead) and there were two "Visual" entries under the Help menu in the stock Python 2.6.2 IDLE. I thought the latter might have something to do with the modified macosxSupport.py file I got from the VPython website (apparently it's not there now), so I copied that file over to its corresponding place in the Python 2.6.2 file structure and that fixed the problem in IDLE, but not in VIDLE. I'm guessing the Visual menu entry is already in VIDLE to begin with. Regarding Visual 5.1, I can now see something that resembles textures on objects, but I'm not sure they're rendering correctly. Dear Bruce, Thanks for the feedback. I just check, the default shortcut of IDLE Python 2.6 Ubuntu 9.04 (which I was using all the while) is "/usr/bin/idle-python2.6 -n". Does the "-n" switch has something to do with my problem? When running the same script using VIDLE, I didn't face any problem at all. By the way, if I run my idle-python2.6 without the "-n" switch, the problem solved. Thanks. On Sat, May 30, 2009 at 1:12 AM, Bruce Sherwood <Bru...@nc...>wrote: > How do you start IDLE? Hi all, Been trying to get the latest version of VPython working in my laptop. I successfully compiled the source and installed using Python 2.6. The problem is after I ran my VPython script using IDLE, and close the VPython window, my IDLE exited at the same time. I tried running using command line python; the python exited when I closed the VPython also. The same thing happened if I used IPython. While I now used VIDLE to run my VPython script, is this considered some kind of bug or it is just me doing something wrong somewhere? Thanks in advance. -- Regards, THChew |

The current version of povexport has a problem. In function "export_arrow" (lines 339-264), there are two parts that need correction: 349: apyramid = pyramid(pos=a.pos+a.axis.norm()*sl, axis=a.axis, up=a.up, frame=a.frame, 350: size=(hl,hw,hw), color=a.color, opacity=transparency(a), visible=0) and 356: abox = box(pos=(a.pos+a.axis*(sl/al)/2.0), axis=(a.axis*(sl/al)), 357: up = a.up, width=a.shaftwidth, height=a.shaftwidth, 358: color=a.color, frame=a.frame, opacity=transparency(a), visible=0) in each, the "opacity=transparency(a)," should be "opacity=a.opacity," As it stands, solid arrows are turned invisible (by virtue of being made transparent). This can be seen by running povexample.py, and examining the output display. --Scott David Daniels Sco...@Ac... |

If I understand correctly what you're trying to do, no, I don't think it's possible. The only way to process events is with a while. However, note that you can process keyboard events, not just mouse events, which might give you part of what you want. Dear list, Is there anyway to get the prompt back and still having the vpython window able to respond to the event? The window can zoom and rotate and return the prompt. I would like to achieve the same result, but handling other kind of mouse events. My goal is to launch the application and get back the ipython prompt Is that possible? Consider the following code: import visual as vs scene = vs.display(title="test") vs.sphere() while (True): if scene.mouse.clicked: m = scene.mouse.getclick() loc = m.pos print loc picked = m.pick if picked: picked.color = (0,0,1) #blue Is there any other way to process the events instead of using the while? The graphics driver (for Intel video) is the most recent release from Dell. Both waves.py and controlstest.py show the "bad" behavior as well. For example, in waves, only the middle window actually displays a wave, the upper and lower ones (corresponding to 2.0 and 0.5 kg mass) are empty. Any suggestions for further debugging, or is this definitely a video driver issue? Marty On Wed, 20 May 2009 14:27:45 -0600, Bruce Sherwood <Bru...@nc...> wrote: > I don't recall ever seeing this. I don't recall ever seeing this. In both gas.py and graphtest.py a graph is involved, so it might be useful to try a multiple-window program such as waves.py or controls.py to verify that the problem has to do with multiple windows rather than graphs. Despite it being a new laptop, it's worth seeing whether there's an update available for the graphics driver. What graphics hardware do you have? Unfortunately, in the case of a laptop, the laptop manufacturer has to pull some difficult tricks to shoehorn everything in, so typically you have to get graphics driver updates from the laptop manufacturer rather than from the manufacturer of the graphics card, and there's a chance that the laptop manufacturer doesn't have the driver quite right. I installed Visual 5.1 and Python 2.6 on a new laptop running (32-bit?) Vista and found that demo programs that opened more than one window behaved oddly. For example, gas.py did not display any spheres in the "gas box" but the velocity histogram was updating as expected. Remove the code which displays the histogram, then the colliding spheres appear as expected. Similar odd behavior occured with graphtest.py . Anyone else see this? Thanks, Marty |

Hi group, I am a very beginner with python and vpython. I want to use vpython in order to plot a 3D arrow. I have a routine that computes the x,y,z coordinates of the vector for each time step. Now I want to draw an image of the vector for each time step and export it as gif or another picture format that I could use for an animation in a power point presentation. I already plotted the vectors but all together in one image. Can someone help me out? Thank you! JCD |
