One of my wild & crazy schemes is to help finance the development of VPython by selling artworks created by using the language. As a starting point, I've recently put together an early prototype of a poster based on screenshots from my face.py program. I'm following my usual practice of not posting any attachments to a list, so interested parties can individually request a copy of the jpeg. Joel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hello. I'm new to python at all. Currently on studies we are learning python and I've invented for myself subject to write 3d snake game with visual. It should be there: http://free.art.pl/zeeball/snake3d.tar.bz2 or http://zeeball.w.interia.pl/bin/snake3d.tar.bz2 It's almost ready so now I ask more advanced users for betatesting, bugfixing, optimising and so on... There is also strange bug I'm looking for in the game maybe somebody could help. Thanks in advance. Zbigniew Trzcionkowski <ze...@in...> |

I just sent some relevant links to Bruce Sherwood--then I realized that the whole list should see them: http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/events/neuro/behind.htm http://www.nsf.gov/od/lpa/events/sevc/judge_crit.htm http://www.isama.org http://www.ganoksin.com/joel While I'm posting anyway. . . . I hope that a lot of you have had a chance to look at my stuff up on the "contributions" page at VPython.org. I have ideas for lots of other ways to help expand VPython from a scientific tool to a more artistic one, but all of the really groovy projects would require some outside financial backing. If any company wants to hire me to transform their corporate logo into a fancy VPython animation, drop me an email. :-) Joel __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? In the "Contributed programs" section of vpython.org is a useful program capital_letters.py from Joel Kahn which implements the display of capital letters using curves. So now there are two 3D capital-letter "fonts" available for use in VPython, Joel's new curvy letters and the old block-letter set. Thanks, Joel. Bruce Sherwood |

These are probably video driver problems, not operating system problems. The first thing to do is to update the video drivers, or use the generic Microsoft video driver. The second thing to do if that doesn't solve the problem is in the video control panel set hardware acceleration to off. Hi, I have these problems with VPython, can anyone help, please? I installed the latest version of VPython from its home page (not the new ver 29 one) on Windows 98 and it worked just fine, using Pythin 2.3.3 Then I installed the same Python and VPython on two more PCs, one running Windows 98, the other running Windows 2000. I got two problems: Windows 98: Whenever the scene window gets BACK to focus (i.e., I move the focus to a different window, then click back on the scene window) a page fault is generated and the application crashes. Windows 2000: I cannot start any application that uses VPython. It generates messages about failing to initialize OpenGL, failing to create context and the like. On the Windows System path there exists, of course, an original OpenGL file that comes with Windows 2000, so I don't get why there should be a problem. Is anyone familiart with these problems? Thanks, IU ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Walla! Mail, Get Your Private, Free E-mail from Walla! at: http://mail.walla.co.il |

Hi there, I am having troubles installing Vpython. I am using Suse - 9.0, and followed all the special steps required to install Vpython under this distro that are described in Vpython's installation web page (http://vpython.org/linux_download.html) . Everythng seems to work fine until I run make command and get the following error: In file included from arrow.cpp:2: xgl.h:10:29: gtkgl/gtkglarea.h: No such file or directory Does anyone know what is going on? I've put together a vpython animation that some of you might find mildly entertaining; it could probably be used as a demo of vpython's capabilities. The source code is a bit too long to post to the list, so curious parties should send me an off-list request and I'll send the .py file to you as an attachment. Since there's some discussion going on this subject, let me be explicit about what I'm after. I'd like to create an application with one root window containing various control, canvas, and frame widgets. I'd like one of those widgets to be a visual canvas. Right now I can create a Tkinter window containing all the controls and graphs, but the visual canvas exists in it's own (GTK?) window. It works, but screen management is awkward (two windows). I haven't approached the integration problem yet because I have no experience with GTK at the moment. Furthermore, this is a low-priorty task for me. But I'm watching and will contribute if I can. The application is interactive physics demos/simulations. -gary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Pajer" <pa...@in...> > I'm interested in what you are trying to do. > > Could you please post a minimal complete vpython/gtk script ... maybe one > that just places a sphere at the origin. > > Thanks, > gary > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "James Philip Roper" <u32...@an...> > To: <vis...@li...> > Sent: Monday, April 26, 2004 10:05 PM > Subject: [Visualpython-users] Re: VPython / python-gtk integration > > > > I have successfully run a simulation in VPython that had a pygtk > > interface using threads. I've tried to build and install visual python 2.9.3 with python2.2 on fedora core 1, when I do it installs the following files: cvisualmodule cvisualmodule.1 cvisualmodule.1.0.0 cvisualmodule.la This is differs from previous installations that install cvisualmodule.so, cvisualmodule.so.1 etc. When I import visual, it can't find the cvisual module. Linking cvisualmodule.so to cvisualmodule.1.0.0 fixes the problem. I'm not that familiar with installation scripts, but shouldn't it be installing the files with the .so extension? James |

I have successfully run a simulation in VPython that had a pygtk interface using threads. The main thread thread ran the GTK main loop, then I had a thread for the simulation. I had issues quitting the program (though I often also have the same issues when I'm not using threading or pygtk), and there also seemed to be various quirks when I tried running it on other platforms. This is the basic idea: import threading class simulator(threading.Thread): def __init__(self): threading.Thread.__init__(self) self.runningEvent = threading.Event() def run(self): while 1: self.runningEvent.wait() # simulation stuff def startStopCallback(widget, data): if s.runningEvent.isSet(): s.runningEvent.clear() else: s.runningEvent.set() gtk.threads_init() # gtk setup stuff including a start/stop button s = simulator() s.start() The gtk.threads_init() must be called if you are using pygtk and threading. One thing that you need to ensure, if you are ever making GTK calls from a thread other than the thread GTK is running in, you must use gtk.threads_enter() and gtk.threads_leave() before and after you make the call. |

I'm trying to package a VPython application with PY2EXE. The demo programs with P2EXE work great both on the original machine or a clean one. Packaging one of the VPython demos (either Hanoi.py or stonehenge.py) appears to work fine on the machine used to compile but when moved to a "clean" (no VPython installed) machine gives an error: "The procedure entry point IsWow64Process could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". (compile machine was WinXP, test machine is Win2k). I don't know if this is a VPython problems or a PY2EXE problem but I thought I'd see if anyone else has run across this problem. thanks Bruce Bruce Peterson, Ph.D. Terastat, Inc Information Access Systems Voice (425) 466 7344 Fax (206) 350 3685 |

This release fixes a crash that occurred when using graphs in the 2.9.2 release. Source and pre-built executable packages are available at http://www4.ncsu.edu:~/jdbrandm/ (the OSX 10.3 build is still in progress). -Jonathan Brandmeyer |

This release incorporates the following changes: Scenes that use thin curve objects now have their extent calculated properly. The primary symptom of this bug was that parts of some objects nearest to the camera would be clipped out of the scene. Thanks to Rob Salgado for reporting this bug. Objects that are created with the visible property set to 0 no longer cause spurious initialization of the default display. The graph module was affected by this problem. Several clarifications have been made to the installation instructions for source builds. Thanks to Andrew Dougherty for his patches. The `vpython` script has been modified such that it can be used to start Idle on any VPython script in the correct environment. At the moment, I only have a source package for download at http://www4.ncsu.edu/~jdbrandm/. The binary packages will be posted tomorrow. Enjoy! -Jonathan Brandmeyer |
