Thanks for the additional information. Evidently the visual module is present. The next question is, what happens when you type "box()" after importing Visual? You might also try this, which will give additional information: > VPYTHON_DEBUG=1 python Bruce Sherwood On Mon, Feb 27, 2012 at 9:59 PM, Daniel Mejía Raigosa <dan...@gm...> wrote: > > > Hi, i'm Daniel and I'm trying to run a vpython on GNU Linux Debian Wheezy > (testing by now) with kernel 3.2.0-amd64 with an nVidia 9400 GT Graphics > card. > > I've installed the package "python-visual" , the installed version says > "5.12". > > When i type "from visual import *" on the IDLE promt, nothing happens wich > means that everything should be ok. > > just as it looks on the terminal > IDLE 2.6.7 >>>> from visual import * (intro) >>>> > > I can't figure out what happens, long time ago i've used python-visual and > it worked well on Debian(older installation, now i've reinstalled > everything since last year) > > I have tested the Vpython on Windows and it works with excellent > performance, but when i try to use it on Linux it just run but doesn't show > anything > This is the typical prompt when i try to run programs from linux > > Python 2.6.7 (r267:88850, Aug 3 2011, 11:33:52) > [GCC 4.6.1] on linux2 > Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. > > **************************************************************** > Personal firewall software may warn about the connection IDLE > makes to its subprocess using this computer's internal loopback > interface. Hi, i'm Daniel and I'm trying to run a vpython on GNU Linux Debian Wheezy (testing by now) with kernel 3.2.0-amd64 with an nVidia 9400 GT Graphics card. I've installed the package "python-visual" , the installed version says "5.12". When i type "from visual import *" on the IDLE promt, nothing happens wich means that everything should be ok. just as it looks on the terminal IDLE 2.6.7 >>> from visual import * (intro) >>> I can't figure out what happens, long time ago i've used python-visual and it worked well on Debian(older installation, now i've reinstalled everything since last year) I have tested the Vpython on Windows and it works with excellent performance, but when i try to use it on Linux it just run but doesn't show anything This is the typical prompt when i try to run programs from linux Python 2.6.7 (r267:88850, Aug 3 2011, 11:33:52) [GCC 4.6.1] on linux2 Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. **************************************************************** Personal firewall software may warn about the connection IDLE makes to its subprocess using this computer's internal loopback interface. The first question to ask is how did you prepare VPython? Did you install with a package manager or build from source? If you start from a terminal and execute "from visual import *", what do you see in the terminal listing? I'm sorry, but I don't understand your comments about "instructions its a miss" nor "doppel check". Can you explain a bit more? I note that the metakatie.wordpress.com reference is mainly concerned with getting the (optional) extrusion machinery to work, which isn't the problem you're having. Nor do I understand the statement at metakatie.wordpress.com, "The INSTALL.txt doesn’t really make it clear that you have to install Boost". The need for the Boost libraries is the first topic covered in INSTALL.txt. I'm traveling and don't have access to the build.log file from my recent build from source, but in the file INSTALL.txt there is this warning, which sounds related to the build error you encounter: ********************************************* BUG on Ubuntu 10.10: The files /usr/lib/libgdkglextmm-x11-1.2.la and /usr/lib/libgtkglextmm-x11-1.2.la specify dependence on libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.la, which does not exist. A workaround is to edit /usr/lib/libgdkglextmm-x11-1.2.la and /usr/lib/libgtkglextmm-x11-1.2.la, replacing libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.la (missing static library) with libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so (dynamically loaded library). ********************************************* Bruce Sherwood On Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 5:17 AM, Sammel Lothar <Sam...@gm...> wrote: > as requested the logs from the install try config.log build.log > > Thanks for your administration no vpython 5.72 so far > Sammel Lothar > > > Am 13.02.2012 15:24, schrieb Sammel Lothar: > >> hi im trying to bring the new 5.72 up on my 10.04 32bit system >> for 3 days now fighting with the installation txt thats a real miss !!! >> error on MAKE configure is ok >> ##### >> In file included from /usr/include/gtkglextmm-1.2/gdkmm/gl/defs.h:25, >> from /usr/include/gtkglextmm-1.2/gdkmm/gl/tokens.h:27, >> from /usr/include/gtkglextmm-1.2/gtkmm/gl/widget.h:25, >> from >> /usr/include/gtkglextmm-1.2/gtkmm/gl/drawingarea.h:25, >> from ../include/gtk2/render_surface.hpp:13, >> from ../include/gtk2/display.hpp:10, >> from ./core/util/render_manager.cpp:4: >> /usr/lib/gtkglextmm-1.2/include/gdkglextmm-config.h:9:29: warning: >> gdkglext-config.h: No such file or directory >> /usr/lib/gtkglextmm-1.2/include/gdkglextmm-config.h:17:2: error: #error >> "Installed GdkGLExt library doesn't have multihead support." >> #### >> >> there is no gdkglext-config.h in the gtkglext deb packet >> >> its a shame that there are 3years back compiled packets 5.12 is well >> overturned >> >> Sammel Lothar Germany >> >> >> >> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ >> Try before you buy = See our experts in action! >> The most comprehensive online learning library for Microsoft developers >> is just $99.99! Making the trail object invisible and then deleting it works fine on my Windows machine, so there's definitely something not quite right in the Ubuntu environment. However, if you are going to turn the curve on and off you shouldn't delete the curve. I would suggest the following strategy: When you want the curve associated with your object ufo to disappear, execute ufo.trail_object.pos = [] to get rid of all the points currently in the list of curve points, and execute retain = 0 so that for the time being no more points will be added to the curve. Then when you want to turn on the trail again, set retain back to 50. Yes, That was the missing part. I didn't find that, because i was searching for 'vpython-core2'.. maybe that's not clear into documentation. Now i'm finally playing with the trail functionality. I would like to turn it on and off, in a way that after i turn it on again, the old trace will be erased. is there a display cleaner function, or maybe do i have to delete trace object? Perhaps you missed this comment in INSTALL.txt? "You will also need to copy vpython-core2/src/gtk2/site-packages.pth to /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages to put /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages on the Python search path." The details depend on how you specified the configure options, but there was a change in Ubuntu to remove site-packages from the module search path. Hi all, I'm trying to compile visual 5.72 because the one inside ubuntu packages is a little old, and i need the trail feature. After a lot of stress i could compile, on my ubuntu lucid 10.04, but then i can't find where the lib is! if i write: import visual the resulting error is: >>> import visual Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> ImportError: No module named visual doing a locate visual gives me no module, only a vpython inside /usr/bin/ What's my error? or do i have to symlink something? Thanks, Davide. |

No, there isn't such an option, and I don't know what you would want it to do -- start the dialog box in c:/users with datafile.txt highlighted or something? Is there an (undocumented) file name option for get_file, something like get_file(file_name=['c:/users/datafile.txt']) ? Poul Riis |

Experimental support of textures has been added to GlowScript. To see what's new, go to glowscript.org and click Help in the upper right corner. On the second pull-down menu, choose Textures. There you'll find a description of the new machinery, with links to a couple demo programs. Bruce Sherwood |

Attached is a replacement for the file site-packages/vis/controls.py. The attached file fixes bugs in specifying slider min and max different from the default values of 0 and 100. This fix will of course be included in later releases of VPython. I thank Frank Noschese for reporting the bug. Bruce Sherwood |

I have been worried that I wouldn't be able to do Vpython on my machine, because I had to install 64-bit Python for another package that I needed for work. My son found a good workaround for me: arch -i386 python 4p90.py (on some machines, arch -32 python 4p90.py ) This forces the 32-bit architecture, even though the 64-bit Python is installed. (I don't use IDLE or the Vpython version of IDLE, so I don't know whether they work this way or not.) It might be worthwhile for other people dealing with the 32-bit Python on the Mac problem to try playing with this. If it works generally, it might be worth adding to the documentation.
