While we're on the subject of distributions, I wrote an ebuild for VPython for Gentoo Linux. I already submitted it to= =20 gentoo-bugzilla (Gentoo's official package submission channel), but it will= =20 be a while before it is included into the portage tree. Hi Thought I'd let the intrested people know that the python-visual package is finally in the official Debian archive, it actually made it's way into sarge already. Many thanks to Jonas Smedegaard for adopting the package and making this possible. Floris PS: I never said I was an Ubuntu user... I just said I value the work they do. Hello, I've been trying to get visual-3.1.1 to compile using the natively installed version of python under 10.3.8. I run into this compiler error when compiling frame.cpp. /opt/local/include/boost/python/object/py_function.hpp:38: instantiated from `PyObject* boost::python::objects::caller_py_function_impl<Caller>:: operator()(PyObject*, PyObject*) [with Caller = boost::python::detail::caller<visual::shared_vector&(visual:: Primitive::*)(), boost::python::return_internal_reference<1, boost::python::default_call_policies>, boost::mpl::vector2<visual::shared_vector&, visual::frame&> >]' /opt/local/include/boost/python/slice_nil.hpp:60: instantiated from here /opt/local/include/boost/python/detail/wrapper_base.hpp:64: error: cannot dynamic_cast `x' (of type `const volatile class visual::shared_vector*') to type `const volatile class boost::python::detail::wrapper_base*' (source type is not polymorphic) In looking at the Boost FAQ it appears that this may be a known problem with the gnu compiler on the mac. There is a cryptic workaround suggested, but I've tried that as best I can with no luck. Any suggestions, or should I just accept that I will need to use the fink version under X11? Hi I'm not entirely sure what your error is but it kind of looks like you have the wrong version of a package or a missing package. Anyway, there are debian packages ready from http://www.soton.ac.uk/~fb102/Debian. If you are using i386 hardware you can just grab the .deb file and install it using=20 $ dpkg -i python-visual_3.1.1-2_i386.deb If you have an other architecture you'll need the .dsc, .diff.gz and .orig.tar.gz files. Drop them in a directory, and run=20 $ dpkg-source -x python-visual_3.1.1-2.dsc Where dpkg-source is in the dpkg-dev package, so you'll need that installed. Next read the file python-visual-3.1.1/debian/control and make sure you have all the packages listed on the second line "Build-Depends:" installed (sorry, no automated way afaik). Then just execute: $ cd python-visual-3.1.1 $ dpkg-buildpackage -r fakeroot $ ${GET_ROOT} dpkg -i ../python-visual-3.1.1-2_${ARCH}.deb [errors might have slipped in here, I'm humanoid!] I just checked and the package still builds fine in the current sarge... Hope this helped Floris --=20 Debian GNU/Linux -- The power of freedom www.debian.org | www.gnu.org | www.kernel.org |

The X-Windows graphics program XPaint has built-in connections to C, but I was wondering if anyone had made any interfaces &c between XPaint & VPython. Miles Jacobs of South Africa has contributed an example of using Visual with pyODE, an open-source physics engine. See the "Contributed programs" section of vpython.org. There's a link there to get pyODE, which is needed to run the program. Thanks, Miles! Bruce Sherwood |

Ok, I've had this problem before. make sure you have installed the python wrappers to the boost libraries. On= =20 Debian they come as a separate .deb. I've some experience with SuSE 9.1 that might be similar. After the compile fails, you have to look at cvisual/build.log Mine ended with: " g++ -I/usr/include/python2.3 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I/opt/gnome/include/gtk-1.2 -I/usr/X11R6/include -I/opt/gnome/include/glib-1.2 -I/opt/gnome/lib/glib/include -D_REENTRANT -I/opt/gnome/include/glib-1.2 -I/opt/gnome/lib/glib/include -I/opt/gnome/include -I/usr/local/include -fpic -DPIC -g -O2 -ftemplate-depth-120 -g0 -c cvisualmodule.cpp -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/cvisualmodule.o " /usr/include/boost/mpl/if.hpp:75: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault " Please submit a full bug report, " with preprocessed source if appropriate. " See <URL:http://www.suse.de/feedback> for instructions. " Preprocessed source stored into /tmp/cck3x8YB.out file, please attach this to your bugreport. I was using the default gcc-3.3.3 and boost 1-31, which, according to the special SuSE docs, is OK. However, I downloaded and compiled boost 1-32, and that cleared it up. I got visual installed with no probs after that. I can send more detailed instructions, if you want. Hi. I'm trying to build VP with gcc-3.4.3 (built from source) on RedHat 9. I installed all the dependencies, 'configure' works without a hitch, then 'make' fails. Please see below. Have I done something obvious wrong? THANKS! --vic checking the python module search path ... Hello, I have installed vpython on my RedHat9 system. I tried to run some vpython demos in the demos directory. I was succesful running some of them. But when I run the lorenz.py and some other files, I get an error message saying that: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Visual-2003-10-05 Right button drag to rotate camera to view scene. A quick word about Debian, as there might be quite some people here that don't know a lot about it. Debian has a number of Debian Developers (DD's) who have access to the Debian machines and can upload new packages into the archive (regulated of course) etc. So basically I was asking if any of them was intresed in "sponsoring" python-visual, which means that they would upload the package that I made into the archive. That way python-visual (VPython really) would get into Debian and be distributed in the next release (if all goes well). This sponsering is so that the quality of the package can be checked and thus the quality of Debian can be kept good. Once they are convinced that I can package I could, who knows, become a DD myself and not need a sponsor anymore. But that's distant future (if ever) and currently I can just hope some offical DD is intrested enough into VPython so they want to sponsor it. The way Ubuntu works (beware, I might be wrong here) is that they take packages from Debian and _selected_ others. So the best way to get a package into ubuntu is by getting it into Debian. It is no guarantee that it will ever be in Ubuntu's "main" component (that would be quite unlikely for VPython), but it should end up in their "universe" component. Hope this helped clarifying things... (and this explenation has become way to lengthy) Cheers Floris -- Debian GNU/Linux -- The power of freedom www.debian.org | www.gnu.org | www.kernel.org |

Hi I have been packaging VPython for some time now and would like to get it into the main Debian archive. There has been an ITP for this way back in September 2001 (#112118) which was retitled to RFP in December 2002 due to nothing happening with it. According the the WNPP bug (#112118) Debian Jr. also had interest in this package. So here it goes: Package: python-visual Version: 3.1.1-2 Section: python Description: VPython 3D scientific visualisation library Visual is a Python module for 3D scientific visualisation. It offers real-time 3D output and is easily usable by novice programmers. . A program can create 3D objects (such as spheres, curves, etc.) and position them in 3D space. Visual, running in a separate thread, automatically updates a 3D scene many times per second to reflect the current position of the objects. The programmer does not need to deal with display management but can focus on the computational aspects for the program. The user can navigate in the 3D scene by using the mouse to zoom and rotate while the program is running. Visual supports full vector algebra. . Homepage: http://www.vpython.org The packages can be found at http://www.soton.ac.uk/~fb102/Debian. Note that these packages are build using sarge, I have packages for sid using pbuilder but they are not online. Let me know your feedback, interest, questions, bugs, tips etc, they will be appreciated. Hopefully I tempted someone to sponsor this package. Thanks Floris --=20 Debian GNU/Linux -- The power of freedom www.debian.org | www.gnu.org | www.kernel.org |

Hi Recently a new version of libboost got into Debian sarge (aka testing). So I have rebuild the python-visual package against this new version. As usual the packages can be found at http://www.soton.ac.uk/~fb102/Debian/ they are the packages with version 3.1.1-2. Hope this makes people happy Floris -- Debian GNU/Linux -- The power of freedom www.debian.org | www.gnu.org | www.kernel.org |
